Personal thoughts: I thinks its hilarious. Probably not the best use of a $40,000,000 aircraft, but hilarious. Also, an impressive piece of art when you consider F-18's don't have smoke, so he had to climb in and out of contrailling altitude to begin and end the "drawing".
I laughed at that. I don't see why the Navy would even bother to apologize, apparently there's a lot of blowhards out there.

I'm gonna be honest here. I read the title to the thread and expected something "untoward", but my first thought upon seeing the image was that there was a cartoon character with an extra tall 10 gallon hat and that was his hat. For the life of me I can't remember the character's name...
