looks like a good deal on a really solidly built car/truck- those mid 70's Ford mid size (yes, i said mid size.. they only weigh 4500 pounds or so, compared to the 4800-5000 pounds of the full size models) cars have a fully boxed frame that is made out of 1/8" thick steel that allows you to jack them up NASCAR style and still open the doors, which makes them some of the best long distance cruisers you will ever find... i'd drive the hell out of it and only ever complain when i had to stop for gas..

Why did you click on the thread if you knew you weren't going to like the content? It is a thread about Ranchero's. A Ranchero is a ute. You know this; everybody on this board knows this. Don't come into the thread to complain about other peoples tastes, especially for cars. This is an equal-opportunity car forum.

The Doc and I have a history of disagreeing about how cool a "ute" is, it's just a lighthearted thing.

I can't help it if he can't see the big serve of amazing that is a ute.

Utes are horrific and nifty at the same time.

Like whiskey and having some go up your nose.

It's the automotive mullet: business in the front, party in the back. I actually sort of like them, but unfortunately they are not real practical.

A bud down here bought a house in one of those snooty communities and he parked his Silverado out front one night. The next day there was a ticket from the HOA saying that trucks and commercial vehicles were prohibited. Now this was not a junker truck, it was top of the line and less than a year old, no camper cap etc. (This was ~1989.) So he appealed the summons (it included a daily fine!) and was told 'nope, it's gotta go'. So he got pissed, sold the Silverado and bought an El Camino and parked it out front. He got ANOTHER ticket and promptly took them to court because the EC was registered as a car. When I moved out of town in 1991, he and the HOA were still going at it tooth and nail. And he was still parking the EC out front every night.

Yeah, I'm messing around here, relax man. I know I'm one of the VERY few here with good enough taste to NOT like utes
I've gone round and round a few times with a few folks here. It's all fun and games. And I opened this thread hoping it would be somebody else trying to figure out why folks like the looks of them. I knew it was a stretch, but a man can dream can't he?

I like utes.

Anyways, I thought these were the mullets of the automotive world:

I've never seen one on an ute before. Would that be like a double mullet? Would the world implode?

It's not the looks that appeal actually, it's the usefulness.

You see a ute and it's "Hey, that's awesome!" because it's a car that can haul your crap to the dump without making the interior stink and it's a smallish truck that can be fun without dumping money into it.

You can't say both about a mustang and a ranger, but you can when you combine them properly.

Yeah, I get that. I just think I can have as much fun with a truck, and actually be able to haul and tow with it. And I'd not be ashamed to be seen in it either. Again, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
