You can't spell rape without rap. Or grape.
Does this count hick chicks?

I actually have that album too.

So do I....

Like with many things in life, I once agan find myself to be below average.
I wouldn't say I hate rap. I would say I don't get it and do not like it. I like music with instruments and singing more than talking, that's all.

It took me a while to get into it. The key is what you're listening to. With rap, what I'm listening to is the beat. Rap is based on African music, which is drum- and rythym-centric. Good rap has some kickass beats behind it. The vocals in rap are another form of percussion.
Hick Chick's better with Angela Hacker, I actually like that song lol
You guys hear of Gangstagrass? I've liked them ever since I heard it lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXKSuHuYslU

NAILED IT +1 for me to
I suspect that the 'Rap's juss black folk tawkin' crowd have absolutely no clue how much time, talent, and vast musical knowledge is put into producing good beats...certainly exponentially more than some dickhead who puts on a cowboy hat and recycles different combinations of the same 6 guitar chords.
Anyway, I'm one of those 'stuck in the 90's' fans of hip-hop as well. I certainly feel as though it was the pinnacle. I think this was the last hip-hop record I bought, still in regular rotation:
Also still listened to frequently:
Just about anything on the Rhymesayers label, with major emphasis on Atmosphere. Seriously, Atmosphere greatest group I've ever heard, and T.J. its because they cross genres with plenty of instruments and singing (they also tour with a live band)
Picking just a few good Atmosphere songs is not easy, but here's the first couple that came to mind. Give them a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--WsoQt6U4o
Wow, thanks poopshovel, i'm gonna have some things to listen too now, I do love some Pete Rock every now and then
wow, Atmosphere's pretty impressive, now i'm addicted! See that's what I like, it makes you bob your head and feel good, makes ya wanna dance lol
yep, Im listening to a lot of K-os, Atmosphere, and Gorillaz right now. But thats the lesser than mainstream stuff I like (as well as a lot of others). I do love me some Pac, some Dre, some older snoop, I hart Jay Z, Eminem, 50 cent, Nappy Roots, Naughty by Nature and Outkast.
I also agree wholeheartedly with the reverend when hes talking about the beat. A well prdouced drum track can be entertaining as hell without lyrics. A good lyric track can really enhance the rest of the instrumental, but a crappy instrumental CAN RUIN even the best, most poetic lyrics.
Poopshovel, at least three of those groups are on my short list to give to people who need a lesson that good hip hop artists to not start with the word "Lil"
One of my top five favorite albums of all time, among the likes of Mission of Burma's Vs, Gang of Four's Entertainment, The Modern Lovers' self-titled, and Radio 4's Gotham.
Maybe I'm weird, but I would actually say Public Enemy is more punk than hip-hop - not because of the sound, but because of the ideology.
Rap is Crap. I absolutely hate it, especially with loser wigger homeboy wannabes.
But then I'm old and only mostly listen to classic rock or R&B. IMHO there is very little modern music worth listening to.

then, you sir, need to really remove the 2x4 from your shoulder, as some of the most experimental and visionary musical styles - styles which transcend genre and end up in everything from R&B to country music - emanate from hip-hop. People hate on Miatas because "theyre for the queers"...what say you to that OBVIOUS closed-minded inaccuracy? same thing as hating on "wiggers". And I like the doors, Hendrix, CCR, and Zeplin, among many other classic rock artists. Im sure your grandparents hated the 60s and 70s because "those durn youngsters aint got a thing on that Bing Crosby".

That's happened to me, too. I saw RUN-DMC back in the day. Awesome show.
An example of genius beatsmanship. A 10 second intro from Grant mother berkeleying Green, slightly faster and looped:

Meets an obscure little break at the end of the Meters' "Here Comes the Meter Man:"

With some P-funk thrown in for good measure:

And a TON of subtle LIVE instrumentation equals:

Damnit! Now I need to listen to the whole record!
