Any of you familiar with these devices? Have had serviceman out 3 times already to fix. Works for a day or two then throws a code and shuts down. Currently showing code 11 which is ignition failure. Have also seen code 53, code 70, and code 12. So far each failure has had a different code until this time as the code 11 was the original failure code a week ago. Not much on the web regarding diy procedures. Hate paying someone to come and stare at the unit while reading a diagnostic repair procedure in a manual that I could do myself. Flame rod and associated parts have been replaced already. Ideas? It's an energy saver 431wt.
Thanks,
George

Reset it and fire it up. It may be the flame sensor. If it never fires, then it has something to do with the ignition. Somewhere in the book there will be a cascade diagram of what the device goes thru to work. If anywhere along the line something is amiss, it will code out. Trick is to watch and see what step of the cascade you are on when it codes out. On most of these units, the call for heat is followed by an inducer fan turning on to purge any unburnt fuel. Then the ignitor clicks or starts to glow depending on the type. Then the gas valve opens and mixes gas with the air being blown into the combustion chamber by the inducer fan. After a few seconds, if no flame is present, it will shut down, cycle and try again. After a few tries, it locks out. After it actually starts to run, other sensors take over to modulate the flame and to make sure its still drafting properly. My quick guess is whatever proves there is a flame, is not working, so it codes ignition.

Call the Rinnai number on the back of the manual. To me, it sounds like an electrical problem. Could be a ground, could be the circuit board.

So I pulled the front panel and decided to verify that nothing looked amiss. Did the GM wiggle test and turned the unit back on. Voila, working again. Reinstall cover. Withing seconds of congratulating myself it kicked off with Code 11. Pulled panel back off. Restarted. Starts okay. I can see the little piezo ignitor through a viewport working as intended. Pushed on internal cover. Heater off and now code 12 which supposedly does not exist for these models. Off, then on again. Starts right up. Leaving panel off until it throws code again. Currently running as intended. Seriously Rinnai?

Look at all the energy it's saving.

Check connections on the PCB again, maybe even pull the board and inspect it on a brightly lit bench for bad solder joints and the like.

Gingerly reinstalled front cover. Fingers crossed still running.
