He won the Southern 500 in 72 and 73, on Wide World of Sports. That was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with racing.

Yeah, I remember watching that. It was always fun watching the good ole boys mixing it up with the road racing crowd in IROC, too.
The man raced everything.
When David Hobbs was on Dale Jr's show, he told a story about when they put a camera inside Cale's car for the Daytona 500 broadcast.
The sound guy kept getting some weird feedback, and they were going crazy trying to figure it out. Turns out it was Cale making race car noises as he drove.
It's about 3/4's of the way into the video, but the whole thing is worth listening to.
