LOS ANGELES — Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.

Those guys who made the transition from film to TV in the early days were real troopers. To think that guys like Borgnine and Fred MacMurray went from "heavies" to comedy without missing a beat amazes me. Big change from Fatso beating Maggio to death ("From Here to Eternity") to the happy-go-lucky commander of a PT boat. At least with "Marty", Borgnine was rewarded for playing against type.
Check out his IMDB..he was a straight up "studio system" guy. Even did voice acting for animation well into the 2000s. If there's a script on the desk, it's time to go to work.
RIP Ernest. He's been in a lot of stuff, all the way up to the end.
