I saw that this morning on the local news (Boston Dynamics is shockingly in greater Boston, Waltham MA to be specific).  That’s terrifying, we’re screwed.

I think I might build my next house with an EMP generator.

Meh, when you look at the behind the scenes making of video they aren't that much of threat at all... requires programming to know where to go/what to do ( i.e. basically put on a choreographed path looking for markers/props with specific interaction commands) while in a controlled environment and they break sensors & wires often enough they have a good supply of spares. Would be very easy to take one out with common household items and any 9mm and up pistol would have no issue rapidly decommissioning one with their very exposed optical sensor, control systems, battery, and wiring. Still have a loooong ways to go for complete autonomy & choice of actions, and they would have to be armored (soft body and hardened ballistic panels/glass) to not be able to be taken down by a 9mm pistol.

I think they are cool, but still just a dumb robot...

I'll worry when my printer communicates reliably with my computer.

I imagine a job replacing robot for things like that would be that 4 legged, one armed robot.

I'm not so sure we should stop worrying too soon. Ellen Musk is trying to create a sentient AI robot brain using his engrams from that chip in his brain. We all know how that will work out...

This is the only reason I'm not more frightened.

This.

While the robot is certainly cool, it probably took longer to program than it would have taken to climb down and get the tools.

I'll worry when I can shout down for it to bring me my tools and it tells me to berkeley off.

I would have to see that in person to believe it wasn't a CGI magic trick.

Have you seen the spoof on the earlier boston dynamics robot?  They did a voice-over and it's pretty funny.

It's an actual Boston Dynamics promo short.  They've had a fully functional prototype since 2015

So I work in the automation space. The two legged human shaped ones are still getting some very basic human prompts. But the four legged patrol and inspection machines they sell are truly autonomous and spooky good at moving around environments. You can comfortably send one out for video inspection of say a large dam and they will happily go where you point them and figure out all the logistics on their own.

You'll need to log in to post.
