I have a l950 Ford F1 for sale on Craigslist. Just received a text saying that they were happy with my description of the truck and will pay my asking price thru PayPal and will also arrange for shipping to Illinois. I googled the name and address and found nothing. Is this just a scam to get my email. How does this work? I don't plan on responding. Thanks

Bank to bank transfer with your banker on the phone. It may be legit, but I doubt it. When your banker feels your money is safe, you feel your money is safe.

Oh, and how does it work? They file a complaint with pay-pal and get money back. Your money.

Tell them you were going to Illinois anyway and you will deliver it so they can pay you in cash, in person.
Just ask what day/time is good for them.
Trust me, they do not want to meet and they have no intention of paying.

Did they specifically talk and ask about the truck or was the message more so, "I really like it"

Two ways I can quickly see.

One is to get access to your paypal account. They will probably have some transfer difficulties, and need some "help" from you. That's the sting.

A second is a fraudulant funding source that takes several weeks to bounce. They have your truck, you have nothing. Since it's a 1950 F1, I kinda doubt this is the scam.aa

Read this.

Paypal basically provides no seller protection. That's been an ongoing beef with Ebay/Paypal and why they've taken so much flack recently from their sellers.

All the buyer needs to do is say that it was fraudulent and there's nothing the seller can do as N Sperlo said.

Yep. Dead giveaway is when the name has nothing to do with the email, etc. Plus "I will pay you the full asking price and my representative..." yadda yadda.

I just report them as scammers on craigslist and move on with my day.

I replied that I would be glad to do a bank to bank transfer and offered them the bank phone number. Got a message back that they could only do paypal. Replied back--not going to happen. Haven't heard anything back. Thanks

Just as an fyi, bank to bank transfer does not mean you get the money. It's actually easy to do that from a fraudulent source that is delayed on posting as fraud. It can be months before this actually hits.

BTW - its also a form "screening" for scammers. Unfortunately, I started down this road once before. Figured out WAY before I sent any money it was a scam and even sent the scammer a link to various articles on the scam. It took care of the immediate problem, but it seems I made some sort of "list". Since then I get emails from tons of deposed Nigerian dictators looking for help unloading their considerable fortune. If it gets to be too much hassle, you may need a change of email addresses.
