We had a well-trained Akita. She was a great deterrent and a good 'feel good' security blanket for my wife when I worked midnights. She is sorely missed. Her bark would make any man break out in sweats. And she would back that bark up if she needed to. She wouldn't bark like a whack job, she would hear something, look out the window to investigate and, if needed she would let out one or two loud, deep barks. Then you'd see her huge head and black muzzle looking out the window. Yeah, nobody is going to mess with that.
That being said, I've thought about security cameras. If I did get some, they'd have to be very good cameras so you could ID a person at 40'. There's no point if the image is dark, grainy, and pixilated.

This is the video quality of the Arlo cameras. I have four of them at my office that I have been very happy with.

Those Arlo cams look good. I can make out plates (close to the cam, I know, but still) and clearly make out plates.
Since this got bumped up, I actually picked up some cameras last month during the Big river site prime sale.

It's kinda a pricey setup, but the big deal for me was localized storage (that I could expand) and no monthly fees. I get notifications directly to my phone/watch. I also didn't want to have wired cameras, and I hope that the battery+Solar on these guys means I never have to worry about things, even in Seattle. If they do go dead, I can bring them inside and charge up on USB-C. I did get the 3 camera plus base thing for 470 on sale. Images are pretty good both day and night the screenshots look worse than it really is, and I can expand the system if I feel like it in the future by just getting more cameras.
Having your property WELL LIT is what our friend who is an officer with the OKC PD has told us.
Lots of landscape lighting is in the plan for next year.
Well-lit is good. Also good is the added protection afforded by two impeccably trained Dobermans. Name them Zeus and Apollo, you know, for fun.
