Tonight's local news lead off with a story about 2 local sheriff's deputies who were fired, but NOT ticketted or even charged, after one of them lost control at a very high rate of speed...apparently racing the other deputy.

Yeah, cops racing in their cruisers. The cop that lost control crossed 4 lanes of hiway and narrowly missed running into the side of a mobile home. As part of the investigation, the "black boxes" from the cars were retrieved and the info downloaded. One cop, the one that lost control, was going 124 MPH just before losing control...the other one was doing 119.

BTW, that sheriff's department using Chevy Impalas.

I'm appalled! They should have been racing Crown Vics.

We got a hell-raiser in a white Miata!

Sidenote: I googled Super Troopers Miata and my Miata was on the first page of images.

Now that the statute of limitations has passed, I can say that I have personally seen a 3.9l new generation Impala at a bit over 120, and it seemed stable, which was later confirme dby the driver. At that speed, though, my Hyundai Sonata V6 was leading the rental car race. We let off at 125. Fortunately, this was on a deserted, long, secluded, two lane on ramp, no other cars were around. We all do stupid things when in our mid 20s.

a friend and i once caused a cop to hit a deer at over 100mph.. well, all we did was make up a story on the cb about a red Camaro that was hauling ass outta town.. not even a minute later we see the flashing lights heading out of town on that same road.. a few minutes later we decide to cruise out of town that way and see the flashing lights over the hill on the edge of town.. as we get to the top of the hill, we see 4 really nice dark black streaks in the road that were about 300 feet long and led right to the back of the cop car that was sitting at an angle on the shoulder.. as we got closer, we saw the cop out shining his maglight on the front of his smashed car and saw pieces of deer and late 80's Caprice grille, headlights and windshield scattered across the road.. we stopped by the scene about an hour later and i picked up a piece of the grille and still have it over 20 years later..

we found out a few days later from one of the other cops that the officer in question had been listening to our cb conversation- in violation of some city or county rules- and took off after the mysterious red Camaro and hit the deer at over 120mph right where the 30mph city speed limit gives way to the 55mph country speed limit.. he not only didn't lose his job, but the city got a shiny new Caprice out of the deal and the other cops gave him crap for years about that. the car was fixed and put up for sale at the local used car lot- i almost got an 89 Caprice 9C1 with a brand new front end and new paint for $500, but someone beat my bid by $5.. i think i would have kept that car forever if i had won the auction..

i once raced an akron cop in a crown vic light to light down Market street right through town at about 10pm one night. i was in my caprice with black wheels and pushbars back in the day, and had no idea it was a cop. a white crown vic pulled next to me and revved his engine so we took off on green. i had him by a little bit. when i stopped at the next light i looked over and saw the start of his stripes behind the wheel, and he pulled up, looked at me, nodded, and turned left.

weird, scary, and lucky all in one. but i got a decent story out of it. lucky he did not arrest me.

A cop-spec Impala can GO 124 mph? Color me surprised. I think my old, wheezing oil-burning coolant-leaking Saturn can outrun them in a straight line...

I thought they where specially trained to drive at high rates of speed and maneuvers which makes it ok for them to drive like asshats? er at least thats what they told me when I'd questioned their actions to a superior officer after an officer nearly sideswiped me while drifting though an intersection.

I raced a Sandy Springs cop (him in a Crown Vic) and I was in a Aston Vanquish S. Only because he wanted to. Another cool story I can add to my repertoire.

"We all do stupid things when we are in our mid '20s."

You nailled it. Both cops were under 30 years old. The one who lost control had 6 years on the force, the other only 1 year.
