Maybe you guys wouldn't get so much guff if every time this happens we didn't see, "OMGWTFBBQ, SNOW AND ICE-WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!"

We just got hit with a hellacious ice storm. No threads, little if any posts. We just deal with it.

I know down here in Oklahoma, people will freak out because of storms that happened in Feb 2011. Over 3 days, we were hit with two different storms, each dropping more than 12" of snow.

I wasn't able to drive my car out of my neighborhood for TWO weeks. Had to use a week of vacation the first week, and 3 friends with trucks, to take turns taking me to work and then back home.

Doesn't happen often, but we do get the rare instances.

Seems like Portland proper didn't get it too bad. That photo is the peak accumulation at my place. I'm just glad we didn't get a bunch of ice.

We get snow or ice every 10 years or so. It shuts the town down completely. We have virtually no snow plows, few salt trucks, and nobody capable of driving in the rain much less something slicker.

The grocery shelves clear out early because frequently grocery stores don't get deliveries until after the roads are passable. Last year that was 4 days after snowfall.

We keep a 2-3 weeks of groceries on hand as far as pantry and frozen goods. At that point, the generators would be pretty much out of fuel and we would have to switch to the emergency supplies.

We still stock up before a storm (ice or hurricane) because it's the smart thing to do. The difference being we don't buy anything different than usual and we buy it a week in advance instead of the day before the storm.

We've had just 1 client show up all day at work and like half of our staff. It's raining and there's no snow left at ground level at all. That said, I see cars coming out of the hills with 6-8" of fresh snow on their roofs and can't see the hills because of the whiteout up there. This weather system won't make up it's mind! Now we are in a flood watch, followed by another snow/ice warning overnight. Yay?

Damn right. And I put a Quaife LSD in this car a few years back. It'll plow snow with the bumper as long as the tires have some tread. So amazing.

12” of snow are no big deal if you are used to it, but an inch to some if a reason to stay home from work.

My mom and dad lived in the northeast when I was very small, so they had been around snow.

My dad said the most frightened he had ever been while behind the wheel was driving through Eureka, California when there was 1/2" of snow on the roads.

No doubt there. Im from North Idaho, snow happens but Spokane is a terrible place to drive when theres snow. Apparently no one buys snowtires because they think they are dumb and there isnt enough snow that people get used to it.

So i drive around a bunch of people driving on noseasons, driving too fast, braking too late, and otherwise being idiots. Its stressful driving around

Midwest: "17 inches?...So?"

I've got at least 24" in the back yard right now.

Yes, but you guys get that pretty much every year and there isn’t much ice as it just comes down as snow and since it stays cold, it mostly stays as snow.

Here we get it infrequently and often we get a thaw during the day and it freezes at night as a sheet of ice.  Deicer doesn’t work in those situations since it has to stay cold.  The cities mostly take care of the major roads and highways with gritting and deicer, but the side roads tend to be ignored as there aren’t enough trucks to handle them all and there aren’t any personal plows in the area that I know of.

i get so tired of this BS from the Midwest folks, so every times it happens, I have to explain.  Again. That the situations are completely different.

Nope!  Monday started out with rain turning to ice. Then snow then freezing drizzle and more snow ( that actually was pretty good traction )

We have 3-4 inches of snow maybe 8 and only once has temps been warm enough for the salt to work, melt the snow and then freeze again the next day.

This rly is sumthin. I haven't seen anything remotely like this here since 2008 and you have to go back to the 80's to match that.

Found an interesting article...skip past the weather prediction stuff to the end where they talk about records. Turns out this weekend has NOTHING on 1950. Weather records

It has turned to rain overnight and it's starting to melt. But last night I was out shoveling and took this pic. The car was totally clean of snow just thirty minutes before I took the pic:
