It's funny, I've really drawn nothing but cars and car people for almost a decade. Was kind of at a loss trying to come up with something to give a couple of really good horsey friends for Christmas... so I decided on portraits of their favourite steeds. First horses I've drawn in about 15 years.
Thanks guys... it used to take me a month to paint conventionally... these I did on the computer. Used "dry brush tool" (photoshop) to add some texture, so much different than when illustrating cars, where you want everything to be tight and perfect. Here's a step-by-step in PS on the method I use when drawing cars... it just didn't work with the horses. Really had to mess them up to make them look organic instead of carved.

Thanks for confessing, I was tempted to call you out on that.
It is pretty easy to do, depending on how you do it:
Adding the textured background and brush strokes adds to the effect.
This isn't even a water color effect, but it kind of looks like it.
Lesley, you're talented! I wish I could do something creative..seems like it'd be a way to get off the corporate treadmill.
Thanks guys!
I think I still like doing cars better. Bought some huuuuge canvases - hoping to paint a Villeneuve-Arnoux scene this winter.

Lesley's?
Just another example of your talent, Lesley.
Love you guys
Really looking forward to doing some conventional painting this winter. The illustration gig is keeping me busy -but quick turnover and deadlines make it hard to put your heart and soul into something. Although I'm NOT complaining... starting January I'll be doing two illustrations per month for the largest newspaper in Canada. All cars and motorsports :-). I'm just thrilled - will be working with Norris McDonald, who's probably the best-known motor sports writer in the country.
I can knock off a detailed car illustration in about 8 hours... hoping to get 2 3'x4' canvases done by spring.

Let me know when I can buy a print.

Drooling in anticipation.
Might I suggest some material to study?

Cool! I subscribe to that newspaper on Saturdays specifically for the Wheels section, so I'll be looking forward to your stuff.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched that clip. I've gathered several dozen photos for reference, still haven't decided to compose it.

Here's a pic worthy of your immense talents - just in case it's one you haven't seen alrady:
And add another customer on your waiting list, too!

Let you be you, dear. You're the one with "the eye", not me. I'm just stoked that you've committed enough to the project that you've bought some canvas!
