So, I was really underwhelmed by the ads this year. A bunch of car ads, 90% which were Hyandai and only 1 that I thought was entertaining (the one where the Genesis coupe gets your pulse going). The talking baby was about the only one that was a little bit funny otherwise, and that's coming from someone who is not a big fan of the talking baby commercials.

What else was on that is worth talking about? A million animated polar bears drinking coke commercials, bud lite with some sort of metal in it and a blue bottle (who wants to drink Bud Lite, much less bid lite with Platinum in it?), the obligatory Betty White and Danica Patrick commercials, and was that about it?

I know Carguy is convinced the economy is roaring back, but I would say that the advertising industry is still in a recession. What say you?

I thought Doritos did a good job on the one with the dog (and the cat collar).

Otherwise not a lot.

Companies paid an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second spot for the right to duke it out Sunday in front of the expected 111 million-plus fans. But there were fewer surprises. That’s mostly because nearly half of the 70 Super Bowl advertisers put their spots out online in the days leading up to the game. And the companies that did wait until game day for the “big reveal” didn’t take many risks. In fact, most settled on cliché plots with babies, celebrities, sex and humor. “Advertisers this year are playing it very safe,” said Tim Calkins, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University. “They’re running spots that are clearly designed to appeal to a broad audience and not to offend.”

FWIW, the Chrysler ad featuring Clint Eastwood was pretty good.

I was disappointed to see that the NSX commercial with Jerry Sienfeld and the CRV commercial with Matthew Broderick were only edited versions of what was shown online. Neither was quite as funny in the shorter form.

I thought the Doritos spot with the cat-eating Great Dane was awesome. Enjoyed the Seinfeld one also. What was he pushing? Oh, yeah. That Honda sports car.

The advertising industry has been playing to the lowest common denominator for years. I did not perceive any decline in ad quality this year. Granted there isn't much room down there.

All of the Go Daddy commercials have become so formula-like, it's hard to notice them. Plus, they had a great opportunity to promote her full-time move to NASCAR and wasted it...

The Doritos commercial was cute. There seemed to be a lot of dog-related cutesy commercials this year. The "Here Wego" Bud Lite one was funny.

I liked the Seinfeld/Leno NSX commercial, although I would have liked a little more info about the car...

The Bueller CRX one was a let-down, although I never saw the pre-released version. Honda did spend some money on celebrities this year...

Betty White is always cool to see. Granted, there should have been a gratuitous Abe Vigoda cameo. However, I don't remember what the commercial she was in was selling, so in that respect it failed.

The only interesting thing, to me, about the coke/bear commercials was the Beethoven. Didn't expect a series of commercials to go so classical, and even feature just one composer. The ads were lame, but the music was good.

I did like the NSX and Ferris Beuler commericals. And I am partially biased toward the Detroit commercial.

But, all in all, nothing really stood out as great. Could have channel surfed.

I liked the Clint Eastwood Chrysler Commercial it wasn't so much about Chrysler as it was about the America.

The Audi Head Light Commercial was good too; my wife is ibto all the vampire stuff and thought it was funny.

I enjoyed the Chevy Silverado commercial. One because it was funny and two because Ford got upset about it and wrote GM and NBC letters to remove it before it aired and GM didn't back down.

The Doritos commercials were pretty good.

I thought the Bud Light one with the dog named Wego was pretty funny.

Hyundai with the Rocky theme and VW with the dog getting into shape were decent.

Rest were meh.

Found this on line this morning.

GM said: "We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize. In the meantime, people who are really worried about the Mayan calendar coming true should buy a Silverado right away,"

"GM Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick responded with a press release saying the company stands by its claim that the Silverado is "the most dependable, longest lasting full size pickup on the road," according to Jalopnik.com.

In response to a Super Bowl ad for Chevy trucks, Ford has sent letters to both GM and NBC asking that the $7 million ad be pulled from the air during the game, Jalopnik.com reported.

The minute-long ad, titled “2012,” features a Silverado Chevy truck driving through the ruins of a city after the 2012 apocalypse as predicted by the Mayans. But Ford is angered by the suggestion in the ad that a driver of a Ford truck would not be among the survivors.

According to Motoramic.com, Ford sent a cease and desist letter to Chevrolet and are pressuring NBC to pull the ad.

GM Global Chief Marketing Officer Joel Ewanick responded with a press release saying the company stands by its claim that the Silverado is "the most dependable, longest lasting full size pickup on the road," according to Jalopnik.com.

"We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize. In the meantime, people who are really worried about the Mayan calendar coming true should buy a Silverado right away," the statement reads.

Ford spokesman Mike Levin told Motoramic: “Claims are made in advertising frequently by every auto manufacturer… This type of ad protest happens from time to time,” adding that “we'll always defend our products."

Dumb response to a lame commercial. I didn't think it was that great even up to the F150 mention. To react to that.... ok.

I watched it streaming online on NBC's own website.

They must have had trouble selling ad spots there, because they kept running the 3 same lame ads.

Never saw anything good.

NBC would have done better to GIVE AWAY the time on their website to promote it. Pitiful.

I liked the Fiat commercial but I had seen it before the SuperBowl. I did like the Chrysler Clint Eastwood commercial. I don't know who Chrysler's ad company is these days but they have it right.

Other than that, nothing really special.

Picking a favorite would be like picking your favorite flavor of vanilla, it's still vanilla.

RE: Chrysler ad.

Does it seem a little odd that the company now owned by the Italians is pushing America first in it's ads? And all that imported from Detroit stuff. Can you tell me where the 300 is built? Or the Charger and Challenger? Imported from Ontario, Canada is more like it.

Easy ad pitch: Let's get all gingoistic on their ass!

Love's me some Abarth though!

If I'd rolled my eyes harder at the stupid dodge commercial, they'd have come out of my head. "Time to stop being mad at the Goverment. Let's all hold hands and buy a dodge!"

What a crock of E36 M3.

The turbo veloster commercial made me go "HOOOOOHOHOHO!"

And the (?) commercial with The Darkness inspired me to immediately download that record. I hope they see a big spike in sales this week.

One observation I made:

I am not a Time Warner customer, but if you are, I really hope they are giving you excellent service at a great price. Because, if not, I would be REALLY pissed that they dumped such a crap load of money on commercials when they could be doing something else with it.

car? definetly the Abarth commercial, even though i've seen it like 10 times already lol Eastwood was the only reason the Dodge one was good and same with the CRV, the only good part was the last 3 seconds where it was airborne and throwin sparks haha

I still laughed at the M&M commercial the whole time. The Dorito one wasn't bad too

the Twinkie bit in the Silverado commercial was the only bit I thought was clever and hilarious, especially if you've ever seen the movie where that reference is in

and Flav in that pit, if you know the irony with all that lol
