Some say Observed Trials originated in Spain, while others say Trials started in England. No matter.
I couldn't find a definate answer in Google or Wiki, but I believe it was around before BMW anything.

lol...well I guess I meant a bunch of the Urban Freeride Trials stuff has moves stolen from BMX, and I am pretty sure that BMX predates the urban stuff
