This is the hot water line coming off my water heater.

This was taken after the water was turned off. There was as steady stream pouring before hand.

My 17 yo son found it while strapping the new gas line to the floor joists.

It looks like it has been leaking a long time. The good news, none of the wood was wet. Just a small patch of insulation.

Not to self, stick your damn head under the house on occasion.

also note: cpvc is garbage and gets brittle with age.

I try to inspect both water heaters monthly. Had one start leaking and didn't notice it until the carpet was flooded.

This.

Absolutely horrible junk that should have never been accepted as code legal.

Could be worse, our hot water heater caught fire last weekend.

at least you spotted it! My water heater burst a couple months ago, flooded my laundry room. If there was anything on the floor other than dirty laundry, it would've been ruined!

Our hot water heater is an oil fired boiler. It also leaked like crazy.

Your fix looks like it will be a bit cheaper.

One of the reasons im glad my hot water heater is easy to inspect. Ive had some basement issues but overall im glad i dont have to deal with a crawlspace!

Best leak I ever fixed was for a customer who had some damage to the ceiling on the 2nd floor of the house. I went up top and it was right below the gas flue. No obvious signs of leaking..

So we go to the basement which is basically three floors down to talk about another project. in the utility room and I leaned against the water heater.. It was wet on top. There was a tiny pin hole in the CPVC which was spraying right into the gas flue for the water heater. So when the water heater would fire up it would boil the water in the flue. Condensate at the roof vent and drip back down on the 2nd floor ceiling.

I would have never found it if not by chance.

Hmmm. I've got a house full of 15 year old CPVC. How long does it last and what should one replace it with when it starts leaking?

You'll need to log in to post.
