Soccer fans can be pretty irrational. So much so, they make college football fans seem like buddhist monks. 
As far as being the most popular sport in the world... well yeah. When all you need is a ball and a field it can be pretty popular even in war torn countries.

To each his own, but I never got the appeal of Soccer. To say American football is boring to watch, while trying to defend Soccer is just silly. Soccer on TV is like watching glue dry......and not that exciting Super Glue either!
Run down the field as part of a kickoff team, and try to tell me American Football is boring, or not fun to play. Sorry, some of us like to hit people and not get arrested for it.
