Both were for sale in the 80s. The FB was considered to be more "elemental" but the FC was faster and handled better.

Oh, how I agree. The GTI spawned and entire class of cars. To really understand the greatness of the GTI in the US market for '83 you have to understand the complete lackluster offerings everyone else had.
At the time, these were the type of stats you could brag about.

Are you sure the internets are big enough to handle this discussion?
Since the RX-7 has been covered, put me down for the Quattro.
I'm ashamed to admit, although I always knew they existed, the ONLY time I've seen one in real life was when one rear ended a trash truck outside a dairy queen where I was working (I was 17).

That is a particularly stunning GTV6. Amazing colour, wheels, "stance".

Add this to the list of cars that are affordable now... not so much when new. GTV6's listed from $16-$18K in early 1980's... inflation adjusted you're looking at a $40,000+ coupe in 2011 dollars.
That said, a 2.5 at full song is a thing of beauty.

Definitely. You can buy those things for less than an AE86 Corolla now. Seems like a real track day bargain, other than the cost of tires.
I got my driver's license smack in the middle of the 80's, and I still remember what I was drooling over.
The Corvette toped 200hp!
The Mustang had a Turbo!
The Lotus Esprit had a 4cyl Turbo!
The V-Max was awesome!
The Camaro now had an IROC version!
The 911 had a slant-nose and pop-up lights!
The most exotic car ever was the Testarossa!

Agreed and as such, everything tried to copy it.

Indeed. I think the definition of "sports car" is being heavily stretched in this thread.

I agree. I'm not seeing many small, light, FR convertibles.
