I just can't make any headway! Every time I go out there to clean I get caught up in the fact that this oil pan needs to be powder coated, or that needs to be welded, or blah blah blah. I do get some cleaning done, but I just can't make myself dedicate the time away from stuff that needs to be done.

Stop putting out fires.

I didn't get that phrase until recently...putting out fires is a good thing, isn't it?

So here's the concept. Your goal is to save the forest. A forest fire will include many, many small fires all over the place. You can spend a lot of time putting out fires, while letting the fire establish itself to destroy the entire forest.

To save the forest, you have to stop wasting energy putting out fires, allow them to burn while you cut a fire break.

The "stuff that needs to get done" is just little fires. Let them burn, and get something done.

I know, I'm one to talk. I've already shown my azz.

But I am making enormous progress. I am completely ignoring the fires, and getting up at 5 AM every day to put in a couple hours, then working late to put in a couple more. No TV, no reading. The only reason I am on the internet tonight is I had a business trip for a day, so I can't work on my shop.

Get to work.

Thanks for the poke in the ribs Paul. I'm going to be away from the house for the next 3 days, but Monday evening I'll get back to it. I'll dedicate 1 hour an evening Mon-Fri, then a few hours on Sat to make progress.

This is exactly how the shop gets that way in the first place, yes? Little unfinished this and that get piled everywhere until (some of) you are climbing over things to get to the toolbox.

I know I'm not in the competition, but I'll just make this suggestion to help you stay on track; dedicate a shelf to similar projects; all the stuff that needs to be welded goes here(provided it will fit), all the paint/powdercoat projects go on another shelf, but little to nothing stays on the floor. Then, when you are in the mood to weld, you can tackle several items in one session since they are all together, and therefore make better use of your time.

I am really enjoying this thread and looking forward to the creative ideas you guys come up with!

I spent a couple hours on little fires tonight after a general clean up from kicking the catalina out.

Next real step for me is heavy woodworking, but the little fires take up all available horizontal space. And I don't want to move them multiple times.

I repacked the front hubs on the Jensenator tonight and man is it ever nice to be able to move without tripping over crap. Tomorrow night: get the brake pedal ratio right!

Very well said. I think that can apply to more things in life than just the work shop

I follow the Houzz website, and they had an article on getting an organized garage. Might be some worth-while tips/ideas in here?

I have pulled out 1 1/2 pickup truck loads stuff for the dump, and filled 4-60 gallon trash bags of smaller crumbs and trash.

I have identified about 2 pickup truck loads of stuff to sell. That number will grow a lot.

I have also found silverfish, ants, wasps, cockroaches, and termites.

Probably shouldn't have mentioned fungal growths earlier- found a doozie.

I am on the warpath!

I have finished about 10%.

I've been in Aruba at a wedding since Tuesday. This way when I get home I'll be all relaxed and ready to go..

If I can't find it while cleaning out, I will be scrapping the 81 CB650C so anyone is welcome to it if they want it before it goes. No paperwork, lost that somewhere in the mess, bought another frame w/papers to borrow the numbers but apparently lost those as well. Can't understand how that happened.....

OK, I promised pics after a week (in fact, by default you all did by posting....). The incredible progress some have made has made it difficult to post my pics cuz well, I didn't get much done.
So, here's the pics:

I didn't make much progress at all because I was gone from Thursday to today, so I only had after work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This week I hope to make more progress. Mainly I swapped out my double oven for a single oven so I can powder coat my oil pan. You'll notice that some of the veggie oil jugs are empty now and the ovens are moved. That stupid cardboard box hasn't moved one millimeter!! I think seeing the before and after pics is motivating me as much as this thread has. This time though, the motivation is from shame [hanging head low]

I can provide photos, but it looks the same. All I can say is that there has been progress of sorts. I have some storage setups coming in so I can get some things put up. Also, I have been putting drawings together for a Compressor closet outside. Since I have spare lumber, this will go towards that. 2 birds one stone.

I don't want this thread to die folks, quite a few of us have benefited. So, how about those awards?
From an earlier post we have:
Most improved ???? Most creative use of space ???? Honorable Mention ???? I'd like to add an award category called
Really, You Started This Thread And Did Next To Nothing??! I nominate myself for that dishonor.

Add me into the didn't do much category. In fact, the other Mini is now back in the garage as well, and two bookshelf speakers and an amplifier have migrated there.

On my high school German class wall there was a poster which read "Aller Anfang ist schwer"- all beginnings are hard. Maybe next week will bring visible improvement. I have started...
