"While the company considered using pieces of the Fiat-Ferrari parts bin, Gilles and team chose instead to rework the internals of the previous Viper, which has soldiered on for several years as a track killer that was barely suitable for everyday driving.
Engineers redesigned the frame to raise its stiffness and lightness, the restyled body uses mostly carbon-fiber panels, and the 8.4-liter V-10 was given a brace of updates that not only raised its power by 40 hp to 640 hp and 600 ft.-lbs. of torque, but made the power more usable. The combination of all such measures, Gilles says, creates a car that has a better power-to-weight ratio than a Lamborghini Aventador and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1"
And it looks beautiful if you ask me.
That's good news! And it is an awesome car.
I sorta understand working off the old car to keep developmental costs down and come to the market quicker, but I'm soooo disappointed in the "new" Viper.
Although I am happy some electronic aids have been added. While I was against them in the beginning I see they really have a place on some cars.
Thanks diety of choice they didn't go with Fiat Ferrari parts or it would loose it's down and dirty basic simplicity. Imagine going to the Dodge dealer to buy Ferrari parts? As a Maserati owner how that helps with service costs.
Ah yes, in a day and age of $4.00 gas, environmental crazies, hack and slash economics, technowizardry of hybrids and all electrics, it's nice to have a good old fashioned 8.4l V10 attached a car that still, after nearly two decades says:
berkeley you

I am not. That is whole damn point of the Viper. A big engine and good suspension and that is it.

I'm under no illusion I'm the next Senna, with that much go go juice under my right foot I'll take some nanny aids.
dare I say it actually looks pretty?

There are plenty of other cars that offer that stuff.
Hate.
Fugly.
Has traction control.
And a ridiculous 18 speaker stereo system with FOUR SUBWOOFERS.
HATE.
I liked that they brought back some of the styling cues from the Gen. I, the sculpted doors and rear "haunches", and incorporated many of the coupe's best traits. The front still says "Viper" but it looks like its design with racing in mind. Which is perfectly ok.
In reply to 92CelicaHalfTrac:
- See your eye doctor.
- Traction Control is Federally mandated on all cars, full stop. At least you can actually turn it off totally, and as a bonus not have to hold the button down for 10 seconds.
- The sound system is only for the upmarket "GTS" model. The SRT still has jack nothing but go faster stuff.

1) Did, they're good. Better than 20/20 with contacts woot!
2) Ah ok, then i'd like to change my answer in the "if you were forced to buy a new car" thread to "i'll take a bullet instead, please."
3) My bad.
I am not happy about the electronic nannies but since they are defeatable that is ok. I hope the SRT really doesn't come with the multiple TVs and stuff. I love the side and rear view but the front looks like a Ferrari and that makes me mad. New Ferraris bore me.
Not a fan of the European looks, or all the nannies they put in, even if they are fully-defeatable. It just looks like they grafted a crappy Maserati or something on to the front of the existing Viper. And you know fully-defeatable doesn't actually mean what it says.
I love the fact they brought the curvy-ness back to the body. That was something I always loved about the 1st gen and missed about the 2nd.
Another vote for "looks awesome" and as long as electronic nannies can be turned off I have no problem with their presence.
Another photo of it. I think it looks better than a new Vette...

That's stupendously ugly. I, for one, would have preferred to the V10 left to history.
I'm sure the SRT will be disturbingly fast though; so I'm glad they're building it.
Love it. And just to nitpick but this is the 5th gen Viper. The 1st and 2nd gen cars are the originals (pre '96 and post '96). 3rd and 4th gen cars are the ones that look like overgrown S2000s. This car looks like a throwback to the 2nd gen cars (the '96 GTS), updated with modern details and a modern interior (which I'm on the fence about. It's a certainly nice interior now, on par with most other regular cars, but the point of a Viper's interior was 2 seats, some carpeting, and a basically flat panel that held the important gauges, much like the original Cobra that inspired it).
All in all, however, I want it:
looks incredible. European influence offered slight refinement, but it kept it's 'murrican "get er dun" F YOU attitude.
Great to hear they'll also be doing a track only model and be factory backed racing with it as well.

Out of curiosity, ever driven a Viper?

I have, as well as other cars with more torque and near as much HP and no traction control. it can be done without killing yourself.
Me in my buddy's Viper:
Was massive fun.

I have, LOTS! Even raced them. They are remarkably stable and able to get the power down to the ground even without the nanny aids. BUT - when they are put in the hands of little old ladies and guys with chains and more money than sense who sue when the Viper bites them, I think the aids can give the car longevity.
The feel of the car is a little numb, especially when compared to the Z06. I'd prefer a little more edgy (light) feeling and a freer revving engine.
