Ok, not really. The Chinese have ripped off another design. At least they picked a sort of good one. I'm hoping the suspension points and whatnot are the same, so when XJ parts start drying up, at least we have these to scavenge.

um, they have been building that for years. It was sold to them, and the machinery in the sale. Not really ripped off.

A somewhat popular Ausie swap is to change the front end to the Beijing front end. They stopped making the XJ in 2005, but this looks like they're starting up production again.

I saw XJ and I automatically thought Jaguar. I was going to say where did it go.

Aussies are wierd like that. Apparently there is also quite the market to swap to USDM front ends for products that we cribbed from them (GTO, G8). I wonder how long it will be before they start buying up the front ends off squashed cop cars......

There is a South African company who makes brand new A2 Jettas and Golfs - same thing. When VW updated the platform, they sold the tooling to this new company.

That's actually VW. They still make the MKI Golf (Rabbit) there too, sold as the Citi Golf.

Correction, it looks like they stopped production of the Citi Golf in August of 2009.

That little bugger is HOT. Imagine if a few of those got loose stateside... twin lights, cool fender flares..... I kinda want.

Also see the b13 Sentra, know as the... Tsura in Mexico? And the VW OG Beetle that was made there til not too long ago....

But yeah, I found it hilarious that the Chinese are making the XJ... even if it is a legit tooling purchase, and not a ripoff.

Saw several XJ clones in Dalian, China in 2000. Most were lowered (or maybe they came from the factory that way), and had a huge "Cherokee" windshield banner on them. Really stood out from the VWs and Audis that were everywhere.

Me too. I wonder how hard it would be to import one? Even just for "track use only" or some such nonsense?

VW of China also still makes MKII Jettas with mild facelifts to make them look more like the modern VW's. Same shell, but different head lights/tail lights/bumpers.

Weren't people doing that with the bug a few years ago?

One could make the argument that the car was already sold in the US.

Or you could do a creative but illegal VIN swap that you'd really never be caught with.

Yeah, there were a few places importing new old beetles. IIRC, some places were taking them apart and selling them as kit cars, and other places were putting a restored, original USDM floor pan under them and selling them as resto-mod 70's Beetles, since the VIN is stamped on the floor pan.

I could pretty easily come up with a title and vin tags from a Rabbit.

I forgot about that. Oh well, I live in Indiana, and they don't inspect E36 M3. I walk into the DMV with a title and walk out with plates. I'd get used to RHD!

FYI - The Chinese are also copying you. They have advanced DNA labs and they are creating exact copies of all Americans. They grab you in your sleep and replace you with your Chinese copy. Someone you know has probably already been replaced. Your wife? Your neighbor? Your boss? Anyone seem a little off lately? We will all bow to Chairman Mao soon...

Honestly, because of where we live, i think importing one of these things would be incredibly simple. I've seen a REAL S15 Silva driving around, a few old skylines, real Civic SiR-IIs, and all sorts of things.

IN BMV just does not care. I was sure i was in for a ride when i showed up to plate my KY Rebuilt titled Mazda with one of the most illegal exhausts ever seen on the road (i can't even race it legally), with it completely de-badged, headlights already tinted deep yellow, and the vin tag on the dash somehow flipped over.

They just came out, looked at it and said:

"Ok Red......?"
"1990 Mazda."
"....Model?"
"MX6. GT."
"Alrighty, come on in and sign for your plate."

You guys are making the rather large assumption that the cars are built reasonably well. I wouldn't.

That's true, but it can't be any worse than a 30 year old rusted out example.

BTW, it looks like used late model ('05-'09 or so) Citi's are selling for anywhere from $6k-$11k. If I were in the market to drop 10K on a newer car, I'd be seriously considering it.
