Driving west on a major surface street. 6 lanes, I'm in the center of three lanes. Maroon Cobalt two car lengths ahead of me to my right. Coming up to another major street, have the green. Car makes a right on red WAY too close to the Cobalt, who nails his brakes hard. Then he lights up his red and blue strobes. Unmarked cop car. I really did Laugh Out Loud!

Cobalt police car didn't see that one coming.
I really need to find a police issue push bar and mount it to the Camry for times like that, when the under cover Colbalts aren't around to help
I think I would have offered that officer a beer. I don't think I'd want to be the cop that managed to end up in the Cobalt out of the pool of cars. He probably cuts down on the dick moves like what the other guy did, though.
That's awesome! It goes with my theory of how to cut down on street racing/excessively speeding punks in cars they think are race cars- Send cops around in backwards baseball hats driving RX-8's like mine, then when every punk tries to blast by them at 100mph to show how cool they are, turn on the lights and pull them over.

+1, That is an angry cop who has to rock that E36 M3wagon all day.

Also why I'm in favor of cops on bicycles in plain clothes.

Wouldn't work. Most cops look like cops, no matter what you put them in.
Saw something funny a few days ago. A woman in a minivan took off before the light changed to green. With a full-on patrol car right behind her. Light bar, decals, two uniformed cops inside, the whole enchilada. He lit her up, and she pulled over.
To make it good, she stopped at the curb on a major street - right before the turn-in for a big, mostly empty parking lot. She started to get out, but the cops made her pull into the lot before exchanging pleasantries.
It was worth the momentary traffic tie up.

We had one of those in the area charged with the gang task force. It was a blue 350z. He was out to bust the street racers.

They have a dodge journey here, as well as white unmarked f150s. I guess I prefer the secret car in traffic to catch real bad drivers vs the ambush speed traps making $ off people who are driving perfectly safely, just a little too fast.

Most cops here in Alabama have slicked back gelled hair and a '70s pornstache. If it wasn't for their redneck accents, I'd assume we imported them from Chicago or New Jersey.

Ft. Lauderdale,Broward County, have quite a few unmarked cars that absolutely do not look like cop cars. I have seen Chevy Avalanches, Malibus, Camrys etc with cops inside. These are not traffic patrol cars, but drug intervention cops, so the boys are a bit less patient with bullE36 M3 than the regular cops. Fine with me.

Same story in StL, but they don't run traffic to not give themselves up as cops. I've known cops to outfit personal cars. My truck is outfitted with amber and white strobes subdued. I've also got red and blues, but the city doesn't want us running them, so they have been put away.
I've recently seen an unmarked 4door Pontiac G6 in the Williston/South Burlington area of Vermont being used for speed enforcement. Was a surprise to me to say the least. Thankfully I was the passenger and the driver was one of my DE students who was doing all the right things behind the wheel.

Haven't seen any in plain clothes on bikes but we have them on bikes. The city also uses a wide variety of other vehicles with 4, 3 or 2 wheels. The marked patrol cars are all Chevys but all the unmarked stuff is something else. Strangest 4 wheel one is a Kia Soul.
But the wildest is the Segways they use to patrol downtown. I was downtown a couple years ago when some guy came running along and grabbed the purse of a lady who was walking a bit in front of me. Everyone who saw it started yelling. The guy made it to the next corner and got knocked flat on his face by the cop on the Segway who came whipping around the corner.
ISP has Plain white base model Dodge Rams (to look like construction trucks and bust people in construction zones) and several GT and one Shelby GT500 mustang.
Pine Lawn, a North St. Louis County municipality has a bunch of unmarked charges. One is white with two black stripes. It sticks out like a porcupine at a nudist's colony.
I know its not much of a stretch from regular cop cars, but I have seen an unmarked Grand Marquis cop car on the highway in Chester co. PA.
