Seriously, I just bought a new transaxle assembly rather than spend any more time and curse words trying to get the old ones off. It cost more than the entire tractor, but I am still under $500.
Bfh has always worked for me.
Usually an e-clip and woodruff key on the lower end stuff.
Where did you get the transaxle?
most automotive tasks are easier than working on a lawn tractor. my belt shredded last night, darn cheap tractor supply belts. it's like 3 guards, a couple pins, and i still need to wiggle it past the guide that is supposed to keep it from falling off the crank pulley when disengaged. i'm ordering a genuine MTD belt this time, the original lasted 2 years and in the last 2 i've been through 5 tractor supply "close enough" belts.
and who the hell invented the tires for these things that leak at will, then unseat themselves easily? if i were dumber i'd fill them with great stuff. i refuse to spend $100 on tubes.
what kind of lawn tractor are we talking about here? So i know what not to buy.
Everything on my mid 2000's craftsman has always been super easy. I've removed all the wheels several times (aforementioned e clip and woodruff key i suppose), rebuilt the whole front steering assembly with new axle and spindles and wheel bushings, dropped and reinstalled the deck several times. None of it caused me to go into a tirade of profanity.

You're obviously doing something wrong.
Oh believe me it doesn't take much to set me off when I am trying to assemble or repair something. Ask my wife.
last time I replaced the belts on a lawn tractor, I picked the whole front end up and rested it on the rear wheels and seat back. Made it super easy peasy
Tractor lifts are the latest gizmo to hit the farm stores.
Geezus... wonder how we did it before this newfangledness.
Sometimes I find satisfaction by melting non compliant steel into smoking slag to be kicked into the dustbin of other worthless dross I have encountered on life's journey.

my 2 ton fold up cherry picker and a ratchet strap does the same thing while allowing me to remove the wheels on the end that i pick up... looks like it takes up less floor space when not in use, too.. alternatively, a long ratchet strap over the truss beams in the ceiling can also serve the same function while taking up very little space when not in use..
wheels have never been a problem, the hubs on the axles on the other hand....
Tractor lift? They've been around for a very long time.

someone invented a solution and left it to the marketing people to figure out which problem it solves..
But tractor lifts are safer. Think of the children.
