I actually wish i would spend MORE money on my cars...
But i have two other very expensive hobbies:
1) A girlfriend
2) Home stereo
Arg. We're going to finish the Deathscort this summer, then it's time to go whole-hog on the Celica. I'm done messing around with it.
Motorsport has an excellent money-for-fun ratio. Many popular hobbies have a horrible money-for-fun ratio, especially home theatre systems (which have no practical applications, while you may be able to drive your track car on the street). Any decent PC and a pair of headphones will play the movies just fine.
Oh and my favorite watch costs $15 - it's my favorite because it's the only watch I've ever seen that shows the full date and time at a glance. No need to press any buttons. My sister calls it a "G.I. Joe watch"...I have no idea why, it just looks like a regular black digital watch...

x2. The reason I quit circuit racing was because I actually paid my child support.
I wish I'd been smart enough to go autocrossing immediately after the divorce...by now I might have had enough seat time to actually be good at it...

Cheaper than a girlfriend.
That's why you get one that makes her own money. Then when she complains about how much you spend on cars, you tell her you could easily go purchase another sport bike instead.

Yeah, our sport takes money. But money is only worth what you use it for. Video games are fun, but they don't really make any special memories. I don't come into work on Monday and say, "I had the most awesome time playing Gears of War this weekend!"
Cost is relative. I come from a family of pilots. I'm going to be able to make spec racing work, but I'm not sure I'll ever be able to afford to fly again. Boats are an even worse sink hole.
My stepmother occasionally gets irritated with my dad for going out and spending $200 on a track day. Then she goes out and does $10k worth of damage to her car.

Yeah, but think of the memories!

Food cars? Like the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile? I didn't know you could rent them.
I have a philosophical question, if you spend money on an HDTV and a PS3 so you can play Gran Turismo in all it's glory, is that a car expense or an electronics expense?
its definitely a car expense, I don't want to believe I am spending car money on electronics.
Besides, there is nothing you can buy that will give you the feeling of taking a no horse power car (like a 510) and chasing down a high dollar high horse power car on track.
As they say, somethings are priceless.

ya, it'll be a long time 'til I forget the thrill of passing that 350z coming out of the flat esses at VIR in my itty bitty CRX...ftw
Hmm, for the price of my new TV, I could have gotten a Mopar Performance ECM for Serenity. I am ashamed of myself.

I spent the day at the Road America Vintage Races this past summer and probably spent less than $75.00 on this Korean Girl for the entire day.

Or getting the point-by from a 350Z after chasing them down through turns 10-13 at Thunderhill.... in an automatic 5.0 'vert with no mods outside of chassis bracing.
(Shush, I know it was a newb driver... don't ruin my fun!)

I actually found a food car race.

What's the old joke about some timers not needing a seconds display?

Like some of my younger friends say, "Word Up!" At my first SCCA drivers' school, my whole run group was stuck behind someone who'd never driven a manual before. I was the only one who noticed when they took the yellow flags down on the straights (I'd been a Corner Worker for years), and I just pulled out of line and took off. I had two laps to myself before the V8s caught me (and I never saw any of the other ITB cars for the rest of the session).
Can't put a dollar figure on that!
