Apparently, people have been lobbying for over 20 years to get the Academy to recognize stunt people and stunts in films. I guess I never realized this was not a thing, I assumed it was given out at the "other" show along with best sound editing and background matte painting and stuff. How the heck can the thing that puts more people in more seats than anything else (OK, maybe second to nudity) not have an award? This is crazy. Look at the amazing work Chaplin and Keaton did back in the day, it should have been recognized for 100 years now! Imagine Bond Films, FnF films, Star Wars, Bourne...heck any film at all without stunts. This needs to be addresses, soon.

They've been lobbying for a lot longer. Sound editing is a category, why not stunts? I have yet to see a decent  answer,  at least from them.

Which is yet another reason The "Academy " is a complete sham.

None of the awards shows consider quality, or talent, or story, or have any relevance to anything outside of their small circle of member judges, who always seem to bankroll the winners or have family involved with the winners.

Clearly the answer is to have an independent awards show for practical effects artists, pyrotechnicians, and stunt people.

That would be waaaaay more awesome to watch than the Oscars anyway.

Screw people in expensive evening wear giving self satisfied speeches. I want to see dudes rappel onto a podium, grab a trophy, and stage dive off into the crowd.

Corridor Crew has had several discussions about this. I highly recommend their "Stuntmen React" series of videos on Youtube, where they get stuntman on to talk about various sequences in film. A lot of fun and gives you a bunch of appreciation for these guys. They also do videos with VFX artists (including two recent videos with Adam Savage), fight choreographers, and animators.

I'm not particularly a Metallica fan, but I could completely see them playing the intermission for said show.

I feel like Foo Fighters would be a more appropriate act. Especially considering Dave Grohl's hard working attitude, and having fallen off the stage and finished a show with a broken leg.

The Oscars, like many other "awards" are rigged. The average person who enjoys movies probably doesn't give a E36 M3 about whether an actor or movie won an award. They care about whether or not they enjoyed what they saw on the screen.

The Taurus Awards is for stuntpeople. Basically their own DIY Awards.  SAG is the only big name awards tphat recognize stunts.

The Academy's horseE36 M3 answer currently is they don't have time. Cut one or two of the hokey ass song and dance numbers, cut down the opening monologue in which the host says the same thing they have since the beginning.

They deserve recognition.

Does anyone actually care about the oscars anymore?  I thought everyone knew it was just a giant industry circle jerk.

Yup, looks like most of America has woken up to the circle jerk and tuned out.  This is viewership for awards shows over the last few decades.

The only show that was entertaining and self-deprecating (when Gervace hosted) has been (socially) canceled.

But yes, I think the public has gotten wise to the absurdity.  Heck, the last one started with a speech noting how people hate it when hosts / speakers use it as an opinion platform... then immediately goes into a long opinion rant...

If they did do stunt awards, most of them would probably go to a guy sitting in front of an effects computer anyway.

What? how could anyone not want to watch a bunch of spoiled millionaires pat themselves on the back for remembering lines (someone else wrote) long enough to say them on camera, then take home gift baskets worth more than the average persons house ?

I guess this is more proof the Academy is completely missing why normal people watch movies, rather like how "Oscar bait" gets used as an insult.

With the ownership structure of media conglomerates these days I'm not sure if this could/would happen, but wouldn't it be cool of whoever airs the oscars just says 'People don't care about this E36 M3 anymore, let's drop it from our line up'

If you are referring to the Golden Globes, that is an interesting story. The foreign press didn't get invited to all the Hollywood parties, so they made up their own organization, with an award because Hollywood loves to get awards. Suddenly, they are all getting invited to the big parties and the Golden Globes were a thing. It was pretty well known that you could easily buy an award, and that foreign films and actors would get undue attention. It worked for a lot of years until it all collapsed and now the awards are nothing more than a Twitter post.

So what can we learn here? We, meaning all of us, are now members of the Real Action Motion Picture Effect and Stunts, or RAMPES. Our annual awards, the Rampies, will be given out to deserving winners in several catagories. Our ceremony will be at COTA so that nominees can enter at high-speeds in cars, by jumping from helicopters or being exploded onto the stage. We will get invited to all the parties and get awesome gift baskets. Who's with me?

You'll need to log in to post.
