Did anyone hear about this? October 1st this dude was out hiking when he got the "Revenent" treatment from a mamma grizzly. Ouch!!

and there you have it. The internet is wrong. Both guns and bear spray didn't work for this guy.. so. basically its time to cower in the corner.
Serious note. According to the USFS about 98% of bear attacks are stopped by bear spray and about 50-60% are stopped with guns. This poor guy happened to be on the wrong side of statistics.

No, there's a new weapon we can use against them...quadcopters.

He never drew his pistol (questionable whether it would have been effective anyway), but yeah. Bear spray fail on this one.

Moths like fire. And do you know what likes moths? SPIDERS! But you can kill those with the flamethrower.

Imagine how many youtube hits you would get if you got go-pro footage of you slugging it out with a fully engulfed, napalm fired grizzly bear. I'm sure it would still kill you - but no one forget about for at least two days.

And you get tasty bbq!

So, spray is ~27.5 Berkin’ times more effective than bullets (1–((0.5+0.6)/2)) / (1-0.98) = 27.5
Um, I’m pretty sure the USFS let the bears perform the statistical analysis on that one:

I believe it. Not many handguns short of a .454 Casul are gonna have much effect on a grizzly. Those things are basically furry tanks fueled by rage with sensitive noses. Watching Alaska State Troopers taught me that those guys carry 12 ga shotguns with slugs when they're out in the woods for bear protection.
You don't need a gun or bear spray. Just kill it with whatever you can grab that is handy. Like a man.
Seriously. This is a cool story.
Hi thatsnowinnebago,
Fair enough.
The huge spread got my attention as measurement error alone would make it difficult to defend that claim…it’s to be expected that many people would be reluctant to admit they were armed (National Park Regulations) or fired on an animal (protected species) or, or, or.
You know, it's the old 3S’s…Shoot – Shovel – Shhhhh.
Admittedly, I don’t know what the actual numbers are…I just thought it was funny to imagine the bears cooking up that statistic in an effort to avoid getting shot.

If you google you can find the study. All they did is look at actual attacks and rates of death when spray vs bullets were deployed.
Here's what I know from talking with a bunch of Alaskan guides. For people who live out there and use their guns constantly, the guns are best. Their reasoning was that those who live out there know how to avoid situations more carefully than others. Now for the average guy, the spray is more effective.
Look up the study. I know you're s guy who likes numbers. I think what we all need to remember is that you are rating the effectiveness of both user and device and not just the device.
Hi Fueled by Caffeine,
My post was 90% a stab at humor and 10% a cynical old math guy that’s jaded from decades of getting hit with E36 M3’y science.
My apologies, I should have made it more clear that I was mostly kidding.

"The man who killed Colorado’s last grizzly in hand-to-hand combat and lived to tell about is now 80 years old and working full time in the outdoor department at the Wal-Mart store in Marion."
I'm not sure how feel about an eighty year old man, who killed a grizzly by hand and was an outfitter and guide for decades, working full time at a Walmart.

Ohh no worries. No offense taken. Yes sarcasm is tough to convey on the interwebs
In reply to Nick (Bo) Comstock: I'll bet he doesn't get shoplifters in his section!
But seriously, I hope he's doing it because he likes getting out of the house and not because he's broke.
The statistics depend upon the gun. A .338 Winchester Mag is known to be killer on grizzly bears. On the other hand a .44 mag with hollow points has been known to not get the bullets past the skin of a grizzly bear. Bears are tough animals.

Hey, I travel to Minnesota very frequently...are you close to Plymouth?
The article talked about the bear knocking his pistol "from his pocket". Any pistol that fits in a pocket is pretty much just gonna make Yogi cranky.
In reply to RX Reven':
Yeah pretty close. I work south of the airport and live about 20 min away from Plymouth. Let me know when you are in town.

Thanks, I will...I travel a lot and I think it’d be fun to see how many different states I can treat a GRM member to a beer in.
