Touche'! Yes we had that over the weekend; now "just" flooding and black ice warnings for tonight. More rain later this week....

Wow, so that's what my sisters had to drive home in. They go to Champlain College in Burlington, VT, but are home this week. We have to get snow tires for their Suzuki Aerio AWD this week.

Yeah, can't wait for the real floods to start as it warms up during the week. Snow's gotta go somewhere. Lucky (?) for us we're at 1000 feet.

it's better that than "close" to a creek that'll be a raging river in a a week or so.

Question for the VT GRMers: How well do snow tires perform on the hills of Burlington? My sisters have skidded twice on one of Burlington's icy hills, hitting the car in front of them once and putting a big dent in the Aerio's hood. They are currently on the stock all-season tires, which reviews and my sisters say absolutely suck in the winter. The General Altimax Arctics on my Speed3 kick ass but where I live is nowhere near as hilly as Burlington, so I don't know how they would perform on a big, icy hill.

Studed tires are the only type that really grip as your asking a tire to do. Don't know if they're legal there.

Studs are legal. My studded Hakkapelitta's = champion of that is wintery. You want to drive around here, you need snows. Fact. Today was the first time I've ever been suck. Had to stop in the 18" snowbank at the bottom of my driveway from plowing.

If roads were more than a lane wide, I would have made the 45 mile trek to work without (too much) hesitation. I'm not doing 45 miles at 25mph while playing chicken with plows, however.

This spring is gonna be a rough one.

If they are living in Burlington (Champlain College), studs may be overkill. But do not think all-seasons (3 season) are gonna work. Get some Blizzaks or similar. On ice nothing short of studs will really do, but if they aren't going out in too much nasty then go studless. Put the snows on a second set of rims so they'll only need to jack up the car and swap them over. Or check with one of us and we'll do it. I keep most of my tools in my car. ( I own a VW!)

RexSeven:

Having worked all over in the tire industry in New England for a few years, and being an avid snow tire fan, I'd say skip the studs... They arguably add little to the driving experience but road noise once the "teat" wears off.

I've owned a few flavors of Hakkas, Blizzaks, Winterforce, Altimax, and iPikes. My favorite all-arounder (anything from dry road, to slush, to two feet of snow, to ice) has been the Hankook iPike. Amazing for the money, just as good as any of the legendary Hakkepelittas I've sampled but at 2/3rds the cost.

They're all I buy to put on my wife's/kids' Subaru now.

I live across the hill from VWcorvette

They say 30+ inches here. My truck has 31 inch tires and the snow was to the top of the tires.

That is a decent amount of snow! I can't complain about the snow levels this winter but the cold temperatures have been sticking around way too long.

Yeah, decent house for a teacher's aide. Nice house for SWMBO who's name is on the deed and front's majority of the money til I get a full time teaching gig.

Anyway, more nastiness on the way. In the form of rain and warmer weather--can you say floods?

I'm just hoping I can keep the crawl space dry as the meltdown goes on. The dehumidifier is working over time and I'm running out of towels.

Can't wait for mud season!! (Vermont's fifth season)

SoFla- Lousy job market, crap schools, comically corrupt public officials, hurricanes, necessary to speak Spanish and Creole, high level of STDs, public health system sucks, our new governor is a nut job, but no snow. I'm thinking about going where there is a BIT of snow. Or Barbados. Maybe St. Lucia.

I've been trying to convince the wife that 30 minutes in any direction from VIR would be best.

I've got a car sleeping outside because someone hasn't picked up a car as promised, that's coming.

I was in Texas Monday and Tuesday; Wed, Thurs and Friday I'm in Oklahoma, flying back on Saturday. Trish called Monday, 6 inches of heavy wet stuff that brings power lines down and snarls traffic. Our neighbor sees the truck unmoved, the driveway unshoveled (snowblower's DOA) and a snowbank at the end of our 150 ft. drive and snowblows his way over to see if we're OK. That was nice. Trish explains that I'm away so she's taking a mental health day, so the guy does the driveway and sidewalks for her.

I bought a car two weeks ago but haven't driven it because of the weather, it's killing me.

So's the travel.

Sandstorm in Texas, fine baby powder grit peppered into my body by 30 - 40 mph winds. I had that crap in my wallet even though I never took it out. If I wanted to convince SWMBO to move to a warmer climate, this would be the week!

Snow came off the roof onto the front deck. Wife got home before me and had to climb over the pile to get to the front door. <img src="Photobucket" />

That snow pile on the deck is over six feet high and fills the front 6 or so feet of the deck which is 20 feet long (do the math!). I'm sure I'll see it again sometime this summer!

And the Whippet in the window just stares!
