In reply to novaderrik:
while i basically like that idea, and hopefully it wont apply to me soon, here in MA any 96+ obd2 car must be plugged into a state scanner and megasquirt won't do it.

FTFY. There's always something crazy that the MS guys are working on.
Meanwhile, each mandatory safety device added will add how much to the price of the car?
Don't misunderstand me, I'm all for safe cars. Especially since I have kids and a wife that drives with all the crazies out there. I'm even on the road with the crazies and it scares me sometimes so some safety devices I'm all for. And having done aircraft accident investigation, I know how the black boxes can assist. And also assist in other means mentioned.

This line of thought is the same that through the 50's to the late 90's almost got guns completely banned. These things work on incrimentalism, every bit you give they will take and ask for twice as much.

Well, you can do it in your sleep...
A canoe resurrected this thread. It had been dead for 2 years. Why would you spend 20 minutes on it?

I would love to get one of those for the CRX (a-x & TT car) … on a trial basis .. too bad they are for OBD2 only … (CRX is OBD 0)
it would be great to pull it out and contact the Progressive folk and ask, "what kind of discount can I get from y'all" ?

They are not allowed in NC anyway, or I'd try one in my car.
Hmm, only my focus is obd2......I'd love to do what wbjones mentioned though, but it would probably get you black listed somehow.

why ??? it was a good thread at one time
doesn't matter how it was brought back to the surface, it's ok to rehash all the same old things that were part of the original thread
plus it is somewhat relevant, what with some people making noise as we speak about wanting to pass laws to make every new vehicle broadcast GPS and speed info at all times..

Most insurance companies do not make a profit unless they have a financial department, like life insurance, annuities ect...
The rate of insurance goes up because of your driving or others in your neighborhood. It is all calculated by actuarial. There is a reason why certain communities are higher than others.
Some manufacturers already have the "Black Box" BMW has one so when you get a new M3 and blow the motor under warranty they will see that you abused it and blew the motor and will charge you.
Lesson of the story is stop being like fast and furious on the streets, and take it to the track if you want to do some spirited driving.
EDR is already here, just not mandatory yet.

but do those data recorders actively tell Big Brother your location, direction of travel, and speed in real time? that's the next step, and it could tie in with the thread from a few days ago about self driving cars...

They tell nothing in real time... I havent seen where anyone is proposing real time transmission of that data...
The thread is about recorders...
What you are suggesting would require a massive amount of sattelite communications network bandwith, plus a rather large amount of data computing and storage.
I don't think that is going to happen on the scale you are suggesting.

Somehow I'll bet someone has already done that. It'd be even funnier to put one in a LeMons or HPDE car.
As for the big brother part, like I mentioned earlier...relax. They've been in cars for years, over a decade in many cases. The data isn't used by insurance to set rates. Even in an accident, the data isn't commonly pulled for a routine crash. It's usually pulled in a serious (i.e. fatal) accident. Also, a driving factor for them is for manufacturers to protect themselves from frivolous suits claiming the car malfunctioned.
