So a good sized volcano goes off in Iceland and about the only thing the media is talking about is disrupted air traffic. Gah, I think they can have their cable boxes back.

Besides that, the air traffic disruption is much more likely to have a direct effect on the lives of viewers than the eruption itself. I don't see the problem, frankly.
Especially in Iceland. What do they have, like 6 volcanos a year there? Oh, look, the Smiderson Volcano blew up again. Let's throw some debt bonds in there and pretend we lost them. HA HA.
Yep. Volcanos have spewn crap into the atmosphere long before there was anything to breathe it.
So, should Iceland be thanked for disrupting "global warming" or condemned for contributing? As if anyone really knows.

welp, i think thats a new record, 4 replies till flounder!
back to the question: that depends on if you think CO2 actually has a direct effect on the current warming trend...on the one hand, volcanoes spew a lot of it during an eruption, on the other hand, the ash reduces the amount of light energy that reaches earth's surface.
so who really knows anyways!?
There's earthquakes and volcanos every day - today, I'm just not that interested in Merv Schmuckatelli - random passenger's, sound byte about how inconvenienced he is having to hang out in an airport.
I don't think volcanos dump much CO2 into the atmosphere. The dump a bunch of other stuff that's seriously bad. However, it fortunately causes GLOBAL COOLING, as has been actually PROVEN by the Science Priests. So, all that Global Warming caused by my drive to work this morning just got cancelled by the GLOBAL COOLING from Iceland, Land of Global Cooling. And fish.

i actually saw or heard nothing last week or weekend about the president and a giant group of polish dignitaries and leaders being killed in a plane crash.
Interrupted air traffic is a biggie, hence the news coverage. Heard a fair bit about the dust blocking heat and causing global cooling as well.

Its ok! i'm a Geologist!
i suppose i could have said, no, only co2 created by humans causes global warming. that would have been better, no?

What about GRMers being inconvenienced?
I'm booked to fly to San Francisco to properly emigrate into the US on Tuesday and I have no idea if that's going to happen or not. Oh, and I've got a job interview on the 23rd...
Currently trying to see if everybody's cool enough to agree to postponing the whole thing by a week. Even if the flights are starting again tomorrow (which is by no means certain), there's at least two days' backlog at the airports here in Europe.

They do, just no where near the amount the human types do:
Carbon dioxide is released when magma rises from the depths of the Earth on its way to the surface. Our studies here at Kilauea show that the eruption discharges between 8,000 and 30,000 metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each day. Actively erupting volcanoes release much more CO2 than sleeping ones do. Gas studies at volcanoes worldwide have helped volcanologists tally up a global volcanic CO2 budget in the same way that nations around the globe have cooperated to determine how much CO2 is released by human activity through the burning of fossil fuels. Our studies show that globally, volcanoes on land and under the sea release a total of about 200 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This seems like a huge amount of CO2, but a visit to the U.S. Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) website (http://cdiac.ornl.gov/) helps anyone armed with a handheld calculator and a high school chemistry text put the volcanic CO2 tally into perspective. Because while 200 million tonnes of CO2 is large, the global fossil fuel CO2 emissions for 2003 tipped the scales at 26.8 billion tonnes. Thus, not only does volcanic CO2 not dwarf that of human activity, it actually comprises less than 1 percent of that value.

I don't know about being condemned for a volcano, but they should be condemned for this.......

OK - now I have an interest in the flights - I hope you make it - beers on me if you get to Chicago.
I still don't want to see random sound bytes of stranded travellers though.

Better when it's proven beyond consensus, yes?

Dood! That thing was berkelying rad!

It was a busy week for the Russians. They killed of the Polish leadership, they got a revolt in Kyrgyzstan, they got a new START treaty out of US, they got to make some headlines with the nuclear reactor they are building for Iran, and they got a 7 year old orphan back.

proven? Nah, we'll just say it's proven and everyone agrees so there's no reason to question anything! Flawless victory!

It's a little known fact that chicks dig rocks.

Jeremy Warner said: For those who doubt the veracity of my blog yesterday suggesting that the Icelanders had summued up some kind of Nordic god in revenge for Britain’s use of strong armed tactics to extract compensation over the Icesave collapse, take a look at the following photograph. Incredible it may seem, but taken by the Icelandic coast guard a few days back using special cameras, it shows the three main vents of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. If this is not the face of some fallen deity summoned up from the undeworld, I don’t know what is.
