I think MM had been been there, done that by then.
I always thought he said "and do the other things", and by this I took it to mean the projects like Gemini which were still way in the future at that point as well as the unmanned exploration stuff.

It also seems that NASA has current pictures which show the equipment that the astronauts left behind. I haven't seen the pics, but allegedly you can even see the trails of footprints.
EDIT: I just saw FGC's link to the LRO pics, he beat me to it. The Apollo 14 pic is the one with the trails of footprints.

It's "other things." In the previous paragraph he mentioned three: (1) climbing the highest mountain, (2) flying across the Atlantic, and (3) Rice playing Texas. (The speech was given in Rice Stadium.)

Does anyone else get thrown off by how JFK says "de-cade"? The accents on the wrong syllable.
