Our current bagless, non retractable cord vacuum (purchased against my recommendation) is, (surprise!), a total piece of E36 M3.
We need an upright with a bag and a retractable cord.
Suggest away...

I'll only echo you. Tunawife wanted a bagless Shark vacuum that she got, and I can't stand it. It's easy enough to use, but 2" of crap in the canister clogs it helplessly, and guess who gets to clean it!!
I've got a Dyson bagless I got on sale at BJs, which I like a lot, and it picks up some serious stuff without blocking, for sure. Not retractable cord, though, and the hose on the wand is a bit of a PITA due to its need to compress so aggressively. But I'd recommend it.
I picked up a bagless shark vacuum on black Friday for cheap. I actually really like it and haven't experienced the issues Tuna has. It has tons of power and has a pet attachment that works wonders with the cat fur we have everywhere.
We use an ancient canister vacuum with with a beater bar attachment, from some time in the early '702 that was my wife's Grandmother's. My wife loves it, so I've been repairing it for the 20 years we've had it. I can still get most parts for it but I've had to fire up the lathe and the mill more than once to fabricate some stuff.
I'll echo Duke. We got a Dyson Ball Animal refurbished from Woot! 3 or 4 years ago. No retractable cord, not a big deal, and yes the hose is cumbersome to use any tools on, but it does a phenomenal job of sucking. I mean that in a good way.
I thought our old Bissell was a half way decent vacuum before it died, I mean it sucked stuff up, and things looked clean. First time I used that Dyson I was blown away at how much more it got out of the bedroom carpet.
If you don't want to know just how disgusting you are, don't get a Dyson.
I have a Kirby that we paid WAAAY too much for back in 2000. It's heavy and can be a little awkward at times, but it will out suck any other vacuum I've ever seen or heard of. No retractable cord though.

We have a Dyson and my review would mirror yours. Most importantly, my wife likes it.
we've been using dyson's for years now. MiL bought us a Shark and we both hated it. Seriously gave you tennis elbow. The Dysons last us about 3-4 years at a time with 3 large (now 2) dogs in the house and living on a gravel road.
We bought a used Aerus (formerly Electrolux) upright a decade ago and, with periodic cleanings, it has done great duty ever since. It's a clone of a commercial model and parts interchange with Electrolux upright models going back to the 80's.
We bought a Eureka about 5-years ago & have been happy with it. It's an upright with bag & non-retracting cord, but damn does it suck. I think it's this one.
We also picked have a Hoover Wind Tunnel bagless upright we bought a year ago. It works ok, but I find the bagless feature is way more of a mess than dealing with bags. The retractable cord is nice though...until it whips around and nails your ankle.

Ditto! Great vacuum, but heavy and stupid expensive. Never a question of getting the job done though. Do not plan to buy another vacuum..ever!
Miele makes a couple uprights that fit that description. If they're anything like the canisters they're excellent. I enjoy not being deafened by my vacuum which is my biggest complaint about other brands. It filters really well too.
Bagged vacuums are great...At not letting you see or know just how much dirt they're not picking up.
Had a Dyson. Sucked more than the wife. Have a shark. Cheaper, does the same job. Vacuum salesman I know will always buy Dyson, if he can't get a Kirby.

3rds. Bought cheap off of Craigslist. Bullet proof, self propelled, gets the floor and carpet clean. Has needed nothing in the 5 years we have had it other than a couple of belts and bags. Compared to the plastic crap we have had before, it should last forever.
Looking at my local CL it appears used Kirbys run from $100-$200. If you can deal with the weight, seriously they are the best around.

We have one. Or should I say I have one. My wife will not use it as it is to heavy for her. But it is probibly 25 years old and works great. I got an Electrolux canister for my wife and she loves it. They are pricy but are worth it.

Same here, our first dyson was awesome; the second one didn't suck (not a good thing in a Vacuum). Bought a shark and it has worked well.

We've got one, too. Took a little to get used to a canister, but good Lord, does it suck. So quiet, too. GF loves how clean it gets the house, with two cats.
Ex-wife took her Kirby G5, and I don't miss it. I hated it. Heavy and didn't pick up a damn thing.
We hate our dyson - heavy, loud, gimmicky features, ball is disgusting, inconsistent cleaning. I like to tell anyone who will listen how they're a marketing company not an engineering firm.

My mother bought a Miele canister back in the mid-80s. I think she paid something like $900 for it back then. I was appalled, but damn that was the nicest vacuum I've ever used. My dad may still have it.
