I think for most of us it's not a case of Facebook or smart phones being demonized, it's just that we don't have a need for them. Certainly they can be useful tools for those who do.
this ^^^^^^ for my particular situation, I just can't justify the cost of a contract smart phone .... wouldn't help me and my life style in any measurable way ... and my FB account has never been used, other than to allow me to look at pics/videos that get posted that aren't open to the public

This is the same for me as well. My girlfriend complains about me always using hers... but she has one, why do I need it? The times that I'm away from a laptop or someone else are so rare that I simply can't find a reason to get one for $360 a year extra.
