Benny Carter - June in January
Benny was an alto sax player. Generally, I'm not a big fan of the alto sax ... because of the style many alto sax players think they must uphold (i.e. bebop Charlie Parker style). And that includes my friend Greg Abate, who is an international alto sax master. But Benny played alto like a tenor and I really like his style. This song exemplifies that.

I'm stuck on the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir. Again. When the band shut down, they made their entire catalog including a bunch of live shows available to download for free which is a very cool move.

Not by me!
Bourbon Tabernacle Choir. What a fantastic band name.
I've listened to the band Teenage Wrist's Chrome Neon Jesus album about 5 times today. Every single song on there is stellar. A friend recommended these guys to me and I'm hooked. They sound like a lot of the 90's Shoegaze/Alternative bands I loved back in the day all thrown into a nostalgic blender but with something new on top of it. It's so familiar, yet so new.

Achilles Last Stand.
Coke fueled ego trip or not, zep did some mighty things. Sonic berkeleyin bliss
This week this came on the radio during the lunchtime request hour on the classic rock station that permeates where I work.
A couple minutes in, I literally froze mid-conversation and was like "hey, this is familiar but not"
Later, they had a "four play" of songs with "Fight" in the title. One of them was this.
Channeling "Name That Tune", I recognized that tune in one note, thanks to having had the CD on mega-repeat through many of my formative years. Halfway through the song, my boss said something to the effect of he used to listen to this a lot when he was younger and he'd never have thought they'd play it on the same station that gets a ton of Neil Young and CCR airplay. Certainly not a NWOBHM-influenced-thrash-metal station.
When I was in college I wanted to pick up the bass. A friend convinced me that nobody ever cares about the bass player, and I should learn guitar.
So I bought a guitar and an amp and noodled around for a few years, but I haven't played in a decade or two.
I wish I had learned the bass instead.

Duke, you are a man to listen to on music suggestions. Going to look for more Ursula 1000.
Hhere's a followup for you.
This version has better audio quality but misses out on the very trippy visuals.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Why, thank you, sir. Glad to be of service. Check out Peabody's selections, too.
I like that La Yellow 357 song - thanks for linking. Bonus points for the Allison Moyet sample from YAZ's Situation. I see the La Yellow song comes from a mix that includes Chris Joss, who is maybe my favorite composer from the last 10-15 years.

I haven't found the full album on Youtube, but the songs I have heard are indeed excellent. Thanks for the tip!
Since we're talking about bass lines, this one is particularly entertaining starting about 45 seconds in.
Been playing an ass ton of Michael McDonald today. Unfortunately my co-workers are listening to my tone-deaf-ass belting a bunch of Doobie Brothers songs out.
