At the age of forty what if you found out that you were $10 million dollars ahead tomorrow.

Would you disappear?

Build what you always dreamed of in your custom man cave?

Start your own auto reality show?

Pester Wayne Carrini at the auctions he has interest in?

????

As much as I love cars and man-caves.....I suspect someplace tropical would be in my future. Where topless native lasses bring me rum based drinks whenever they see mine is less that 1/2 full.

Build a new family compound in West Virginia or Tennessee, thousand acres or so. Why those areas? Cheap land, tolerable weather, good mix of terrain and conditions in that size property plot.

House big enough for family and friends, full on fabrication shop with 2 lifts, alignment and tire machines, and indoor parking for 3 or 4.

Thousand gallon underground fuel pump system so I can get a bulk rate on fuel and essentially never have to leave the property.

Setup a veggie garden, get some animals, go self sufficient.

Why all that stuff? To give back to the rally and off-road community, by allowing everyone to come use my private facilities for a small fee for testing, building, and racing in a legal area the owner will never change his mind on. And hopefully inspire the next generation.

Be out of debt. Buy acerage in the rocky mountains.

Go to work the next day and quit. Take a fun job that has insurance, and not take it too seriously.

Buy old mill in town, renovate top for lift style home, bottom as a shop.

Hire cleaning lady.

Enjoy partial retirement while tinkering and spending months at a cabin on my acerage in the rocky mountains.

I am out of debt now. I would give the house and everything to my sister and buy a decent seaworthy used boat and disappear

Hate to admit it but I'd still have to work, or work after a fashion. Need something to do to stay active and sharp, so would open or invest in a business. And buy a few supercool cars and secure a place to keep them. Hope your question is more than hypothetical and you've had some good fortune. Best to you if so.

Edit: there is one very special collector car I would buy. It would take a fraction of the $10m to buy it but $10m is on the low end of lottery money I'd want to have in hand to buy it and look after it in the way a million-dollar car needs to be looked after.

I'd buy a pair of non-running BiTurbos

And then file for bankruptcy...

My fil says the day he wins the lottery is the day he stops making new friends (sorta jokingly) - might want to consider all the new attention you would get with a cool 10 mil suddenly hanging around. And how difficult it would be to distinguish people who value you from people who value your money.

Buy a place in Santa Barbara, CA on the ocean. Walk to a local seafood place and eat fish tacos or a lobster roll for lunch. Walk back home and work on my three 1970 Datsun's; 240Z, 510, and a 2000 Roadster.

Ride my beach cruiser back to watch the sunset every night.

I do like the idea of sweating Wayne Carrini as my personality leans towards hassling people. Once I annoyed Mike Ditka at O'Hare Airport.

I'd go debt free, then invest in land and rental properties. I'd do hunting leases on the bare land to cover taxes and make income off of the rental properties.

I wouldn't disappear, but I'd buy the shuttered Triumph dealership up the street and open Resurrection Motors, doing "practical classic" resto-mods. Hire my wife and both my kids, naturally I'd provide housing, meals, and education as benefits for my employees, etc.

Nobody's said hookers and blow yet? I'm kind of surprised. And confused.

My aunt won $100,000 a couple of years ago, and the number of people who contacted her that she hadn't heard from in 15+ years was shocking, I can't imagine how many people would be calling looking for handouts with $10 million. So the first thing I'd do is buy an RV, a trailer and a 911 Turbo, then I'd just go drive around North America hitting as many different track days as I could. After a year I'd figure out if I wanted to come back home or settle somewhere else - or spend a year in Europe doing the same thing.

Well, most of my family has cut me off and I live near absolutely no one i know, so disappearing is more of a shut my phone off situation . I'm already someplace tropical, id probably just move out from under the mouse. Modest house, sweet kitchen, game room, hurricane proof barn, and be quiet for the next eternity.

First I'd retire immediately. Just call into work and tell them that I won't be coming in today, or any other days. I am so ready for retirement and I'm about a decade short of 40.

Invest about $8m in low-risk financial thingamajigs to live off of.

Then I'd blow about $100k on an epic world tour of debauchery to try to recover from a lifetime of grinding away with practically no reward.

If I survive that I'd buy a decent house and get caught up on the backlog of books and games I want to read and play.

I would spend a few grand on cars and entertainment, but nothing extravagant, because that E36 M3's the problem with the world. What I would do is keep some fat stacks of cash on me at all times, and when I see someone with awful health problems I could easily afford to fix, I would hand them a few grand and tell them to take this and get themselves fixed up.

Instead of working I would spend my time doing whatever I want. Things that would have to be put off for the rare idle weekend could be done any time, without interruption. One thing would be to implement a major Internet security overhaul that only a few people in the world have figured out, and anyone who implements it would become very "interesting" to various three-letter agencies. With no need to profit from it I would do it anonymously, making myself no more "interesting."

I'd buy stock in the company I'd just retired from & go to all the stockholder meetings & be a pain in the ass. $10 million wouldn't be nearly enuff to have controlling interest, but it might be enough to have fun.

Cash out my current property, invest the 10mil to give myself a steady income.

Buy new property somewhere quiet and affordable, a few acres with a trailer and some shipping containers as a home base.

Load my camping gear on the bike and go get lost for a while.

Keep it as quiet as possible and securely invested. I would move to Boston and focus on my photography.

On further thought...

FDIC insurance is 1/4 mil per person per bank. That would be $1 million between the "her's/mine/our's" accounts.

Depending on where we move, $1/4-1 million would be spent setting up our new life. House, car(s), and what not. Final number would be heavily real estate dependent.

$2 million would be un-berk-up-ably invested to ensure I have a safety net. Maybe a trust.

The rest would be invested in a pretty standard manner.
