Ga is sales tax at time of purchase, unless you buy from an individual= no sales tax. After that In Georgia it is an annual registration " fee" plus advelorum tax based on a percentage of book value.

I think the point is that mistakes are made. A vehicle is booted erroneously and the owner is out the time and the fee. Yes you loose the fee because the booting company was just doing what the government told it to do. Sure you can sue the county to get the fee back but goodluck with that.

To me, its not just that mistakes are made. I've got a real problem with a public governing authority saying it is ok for a private company to place their privately owned device on a vehicle by private company employees...just because they say its ok. Then there's the fee. I'm sure it was agreed upon by somebody, but by whom and what was the process? I'm not sure I really agree with public authorities being able to enter private property boundaries to do this type of thing either, but that's another subject.

Then there are the situations where offending vehicles are located on property where the owners don't reside or aren't authorized. What if you have a visitor who hasn't paid his taxes and the car is booted in YOUR driveway? What if you have a vehicle belonging to a renter and it is booted on YOUR property? What if you own a business and a car is booted in one of YOUR parking spaces? YOU didn't do anything wrong, but YOU have to deal with it. I'm all for collecting taxes, but it still has to be done within certain legal parameters. We can't just start doing things because we THINK it's ok and because its more convenient.

Therein lies all the scenerios for a test case in court. Like I said earlier, they're going to boot someone who's got money and/or connections, and a test case will hit the courts.

Bristol's town attorney THINKS they have case law on their side. We shall see. I wonder if they have ever done a sweep through ESPN's parking lots. I think not...

They can come onto your property and seize you if you have commited a crime, why would your car have more rights.

I just came up with a great idea - I'll take a heavy duty pickup, like an F350 or something, take off the tailgate and install some kind of lifting device in the bed. I'd be able to back up to a disabled car, lift two of the wheels off the ground and move that car to any place I choose. I could put it on the street, I could bring it to a garage, I could move it to another house. I'll make millions!

I don't understand what everyone is complaining about. "ZOMG, someone's coming onto my property! Gasp, I'll kill the mother bleepers!" How is this any different from a repo guy coming onto your property and taking back a car you haven't paid for? If you haven't paid your car taxes, you shouldn't be able to use your car so who cares if the government (or a private company doing the work of the government) disables it until you pay your taxes. I understand the anger of the few members who have stressed the fogginess of the laws on this and that this is happening without 100% clarity on the laws, but 90% of the posts in this thread don't even touch on that.

the police certainly can come looking for you if they were so inclined to do so, and you had a warrant. what Dog and many others do is simply protecting their investment. when someone skips bail, if they don't end up back in jail by some time, the bondsman loses the money they've put up for the criminal. the police are not going to do that for them.

tow truck drivers can and are done in some places by local gov't, here in houston, if you leave a car on the side of the road more than 15 minutes, they tow and impound it, i think they call it safe/clear.

I think the whole idea of private property is ridiculous. Someone else owns the ground under my house, and the airspace above it, and the street I use to get to it, and if they want to build a highway where I live, then I am SOL. My property is governed by a local municipality, a county, a state and a country. All that, plus the fact that the bank still owns my property for another few years, and I really don't feel like it is all mine anyway. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is.

When a farm goes up for sale, they jump in super quick. While our taxes are INSANE, I'm ok with it. We have tons of parks, an excellent library system, great public schools, and a town that is actively trying to preserve the open and rural nature of our town.

Wow! I have those very same things! and our taxes aren't costing us an arm and a leg. Apparently Conn is trying to emulate us inbred uneducated redneck hicks in South Carolina.

You might lose a lot of those millions in lawsuits if you tow an AWD with a viscous center diff car on two wheels. Make sure you have a dolly with you so you can tow by all four wheels. Better yet, use a flatbed.

Still, the sarcasm made me smile.

hmmm...remove/cover/obscure license plates at night/when inside a store etc. Not necessarily legal, but effective and cheap. Also, learn to evade a car following you.

...well theres also that pay-your-taxes-or-get-on-a-payment-plan-you-lazy-slob aspect too, but thats beside the point.

Also pinchvalve, a bank doesnt ever own your home unless you foreclose, at which time it is no longer yours. You own it with money they lent you. The home is collateral against the loan. You may owe someone money in an agreement backed by the house you purchased with said money, but by no means do they own it. People berk that one up waaay too often...and Im a stickler and often mistaken for a douche, so consider the source

I'm sure this will be tested in court when a boot minion is mistaken for a criminal and ventilated by an armed citizen protecting his private property.

This happened in Ct. Do they own guns up there?

Several years ago in the county i live in the assessor valued all Harleys at something like $35,000. When called out on it, they said they just wanted to talk to the owners. Well they got the chance. They also raised the values on SUVs when they got popular.

SC has a sales tax that is capped at $300.

wasn't aware of that. I lived in SC for 4 years but in the low country. I know the upstate has some nicer stuff.. Table Rock is wonderful, but they are all state parks. I never experienced a library system down there as good as the one up here. My kid goes to these classes the town has for free. It's great.

I miss SC, but don't miss the heat. Do a google map search on Glastonbury ct vs simpsonville sc. All the green bits are parks or preserves. I didn't see a great deal of that on the simpsonville map.

My town dropped $1.8M last year on various pcs of property. Now they just got another $300k from the DEP to buy a piece of land that has some endangered timber rattler on it.. w0000..

As a former resident of the town immediately southeast of Big Ego's, I will say that the local tax collector did a terrible job of accounting. I still retain every receipt for personal property taxes paid there - some nearly two decades old.

This came in handy last year when they sent me a bill for nearly $4,000 in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest - for tax year 1997!

I do miss the trout fishing, however.

Edit: I miss the pizza too. Big Ego - could you e-mail me a large "Hot and Tasty" from Rossini's in East Hampton. I'll send a check.

Because you have given them permission to do so as part of the loan.

If you haven't paid your car taxes, you shouldn't be able to use your car so who cares if the government (or a private company doing the work of the government) disables it until you pay your taxes.

Make the removal fee free once paid up, and I'll at least partially agree with you (and even then it's only partially). But it's sitting there on private property not being used at the time it's being booted. How do you know they're using it? If it's on public streets you know it's being used. If it's in their driveway/yard/whatever it could just be sitting until they can pay for it or similar. Something you just made tougher for someone already having trouble. Is it being used? Yeah, probably. But probably doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned.

And despite your statements I didn't see anyone saying they'd shoot the guy. Just that at some point in time someone likely will. Which seems pretty reasonable to me (the statement that it's likely to happen, not the act of shooting the guy).

Closest I saw was handcuffing the guy to the boot. Which is all kinds of funny.
