I've been stuck in this berkeleying house for over two years now
Despite this job helping me financially be in a much better position, due to all sorts of global problems I'm not saving any money, I'm actually starting to lose it.
I have to drive 1.5 hours a day minimum in order to get to work and home every day.  In the ~4 or 5 months I've been working here there have been two fatal accidents that I know of along the stretch of road I'm on.  Once a week I have a close call with an accident because people here drive like shiny happy people.
I actively see my friends turning away from the shared values that caused us to be friends.

Nothing I see is getting better at any level

I'm amazed I'm as sane as I am.

But hey, there's still a ray of sunshine every now and then.

Good news, everyone!

I think one reason is because humor has taken a serious hit.

I am all for being nicer to people, but the idea that jokes are treated as if you were assaulting someone is harmful. Someone will be the butt of the joke. That doesn't mean you hate that person or group. We need humor to survive, especially in these trying times. All hail Dave Chapelle. He's sort of the last man standing.

I also blame what has become of communication for everyone (yep, me too)'s heightened state of aggression. The things people will say to people on the net would have gotten them at best, a fat lip in face to face conversation not that long ago. We all need a friend to call out our bad behavior sometimes, but getting dog-piled by faceless masses for a misstep isn't helpful.

Here is another belief I have, and I will remove it if it offends:

We are on a planet preparing to shake us off like a wet dog fresh from the pond. And it scares us. All of us. Many are grabbing for all they can get, which comes from, and leads to anger. In a world of skyrocketing population, and dwindling resources, it was only a matter of time until it was every man (or woman, or fill in the blank) for himself (herself/itself). Some folks just got there a bit quicker.  The fragility of life has been presented to us in a very clear fashion. The rapidly changing world of electric cars, rising oceans, and fire-tornadoes leaves me a bit out of sorts, that's for sure.

Be well out there, people.

The Birds are angry. They keep running into the side of my house.

Some call them Angry Birds. Some say birds don't exist.

In reply to SV reX :

I can’t upvote your post enough. You and I seem to be flying in formation in the work sense, I noticed your reply to my “nothing is easy right now” comment a while back.  Right back at you and thanks for putting all of that into text.

I had a long chat with boss man yesterday about many of the things you listed.  Like you, we were considered essential and have kept hammering along through this whole thing doing whatever it took to keep the jobs moving and the customers happy.   I was supposed to have moved into doing more of a mentoring and teaching role but because pandemic I’ve been hard at the same things I’ve been doing for 25 plus years.  Early on in the pandemic when none of us knew what was coming I ended up doing my job and 3 others that were furloughed.   The good news is we survived, brought everyone back and held our own in 2020.   Things took off last spring and haven’t let up, we’ve been straight out since so no rest for the old warhorse. Honestly, I’ve never seen anything like this before.  Agreed on the demanding entitled shiny happy people out there, not all of them for sure but it only takes one or two to crush my mood these days.

I could technically retire later this year but I think I’d go stir crazy and selfishly I’d really like to do the teaching that I was promised before this all started.

You can't have a thread on piracy without links to talking parrots and videos of Johnny Depp ranting jibberish.

More humor needed.

There's a gif I wish I could find again along the lines of "Chad forgot he wasn't on the internet" where a guy in a coffee shop says something to the guy behind him, and that guy drops him. It's great.

I agree with a lot of the points made here.  There is also the general issue of how people tend to "discuss" on the internet.  There is a general tendency to "talk past" people which is basically the case of taking what someone said, turning it to 11, and responding to it based on that (essentially a Straw Man argument).

One helpful way to approach these things is to acknowledge what the other person is saying by noting what you agree with (it is almost never the case where there is no common ground) and discuss from there.

As I mentioned before, there is a DESPERATE need to properly discuss things these days.  In some (many) cases there are actual real life consequences to not discussing them properly!  I personally consider it a great disservice to this community that we can't or are not allowed, but I entirely understand if those who run the board don't want it... it's their pool.

Regarding the 70's.  There were good things, there were bad things.  I think many people where less aware of the bad things, which in general will produce less stress.  There certainly where "the sky is falling" things going on (if nothing else, missiles, literally falling on you from the sky!).

Also, if you are young, you are generally unaware, and less bothered.  These days, a kid can be well plugged-in to the current woes... which I think is NOT doing them any good.... they should be kids...

Lets's see.... I had it out with family that went hardcore down an extremist rabbit hole. Probably wouldn't be out of line to put a name to it but with the state of things I just won't. Anywho, we don't talk anymore and I've heard 2nd hand that they profess not to know why. The depths of self-deceit astound me. I've also continued in-person work through all this mess with nary a rest break. My companies' future profitability rests squarely on my shoulders, my boss is self-professed spineless, and another VP has it out for me to the extent that the COO is getting involved thanks to the gossiping and, to be a little hyperbolic, slander. My boss left for vacation without even writing my review that was due last week. (Pretty sure that if I was getting an annual raise, which I certainly feel I am due, it would have been discussed in the meeting that didn't happen, but he's on a beach living his best life.)

Honestly, I'm always angry but I generally do a better job of hiding it. I hate office politics, to paraphrase my late grandma they're just showing their asses. If I'm doing something wrong or not making deliverables, then say so. If I'm just challenging your delicate ego, then get over it. Instead, grown men are gossiping about a subordinate to other subordinates and then are called out by said 2nd subordinates for their shenanigans. As anyone who has served around a real leader knows, that's a big No-No for anyone that wants to be a leader rather than a run-of-the-mill "manager".

This is all out of whack but, for once, I think my inane ramblings might just fit the thread rather than detract.

I just read this week: Michigan spends far, far, far less per person on roads than any surrounding/Midwestern states. $154 per person, to Ohio's $215, and I think Wisconsin/Pennsylvania spend upwards of $400/person!

Michigan is also not a through-state, so no real opportunity for turnpikes or any other revenue collecting roads (other than the Mackinac bridge). It makes me angry, too

The 70s were good.  The 80s were better.  The 90s were more better, and so on.  By most every measurable metric, life is better than its ever been in the history of mankind.  We live longer, eat easier, stay warm better now than ever before.

The Covid thing kinda sucks, but it would have been a bunch worse 25 years ago.

My predominant fear as a kid born in 1960 was that my other parent would die as well, or a poorly aimed Russion icbm would land on the farm.

Now, I really don't have anything other than day to day business hoo ha to worry about.

It's one of the reasons the mid Atlantic guys are making it a point to plan stuff. First meet up is in 2 days. It was put in motion when we went to donebrokeits wake. Figured an effort needed to be made.

Re: the '70s -

I don't want to belabor the point, but I remember weekly terrorist bombings or hijackings; I remember the fuel crisis, I remember half of Africa constantly trying to kill the other half; I remember transit strikes, teacher strikes, garbage strikes, teamsters strikes, auto worker strikes; I remember 10% unemployment, 10% inflation, and 10% loan rates; I remember riots and revolutions and coups; I remember kidnappings and mass murders and hostage crises; I remember Northern Ireland and Cambodia and Iran; I remember Three Mile Island; I remember a lot of stuff you folks apparently don't.

And not just in the US.  Maybe this kind of news just isn't shocking and depressing anymore because we're used to it.
