I didn't like the ride-in robot thingies, reminded me of the bad Matrix sequels.

In reply to Lesley:

I loved the robot thingies erm exoskeletons. I was sad that only the bad guys got to use them. Then again it is my eventual goal to build a giant robot so I can stomp around the neighborhood. All this car building business is just practice.

I'd much rather have one of those six-legged anteater horses, or a blue pterodactyl.

Well we went to go see it yesterday and I must say it was amazing! I can't believe how seamless the world was, as others have said I can see this being the future of Scifi movies and other genres as well. It actually really makes me want to take more of the film production courses at school that focus on both the old school methods and the new computer generated graphics.

I hadnt thought about that, it really "could" be a continuation of the Alien movies, just better, much, much better.

I wouldn't call it a continuation, just existing in the same universe. Could have been things taking place on the other side of the galaxy. It dealt with the same themes about corporate greed placing greater value on income than lives.

However, given that the company in Avatar was a bit squeemish about displacing an indigenous people too forcefully, even if only for PR reasons, that still sounds more ethically sensitive than Yutani-Weyland was in any of the movies.

I'd argue that it made way more sense than most religions. All of the Na'vi were able to connect through those trees and directly commune with their deity without a priest interpreting "signs" for them.

I just saw it last night. It was interesting. Obviously a beautiful movie. I was blown by the graphics. The sheer size of everything was stunning. When he was falling from the tree I seriously got scared. The only graphics that struck me as not good enough was when they Col was getting into the mech suit. The story was well told, but it was pretty bland. I wasn't surprised by anything.

So after seeing Star Wars as a lad, I wanted to be a jedi, shoot a laser gun, etc. I got a whip from the flea market after seeing Raiders. I'm concerned that after seeing Avatar, today's youth may attempt to bond with objects around them, like the Na'vi.

There really isn't a giant hole left for a sequel to this one...unless...

Avatar vs Alien?

3d would make that pretty awesome, I'd buy a ticket.

Nerd foul! Weyland-Yutani.

I saw the movie last night, and I'm still on Pandora. What an immersion. I thought the plot, while it was "Dances with Smurfs," was well executed. I was never bored.

I loved it for the effects and entertainment. As others have stated the story is an amalgamation of other stories. Take a big dose of Pocahontas, mix in a dose of Dances With Wolves, add a dash of ewok, and a mix together carefully removing any and all plot twists - you get the script for Avatar.

I agree, go see it on the big screen in 3D, if you wait until it's out on DVD you will wonder what all the fuss was about.

Even six years ago, Cameron was already discussing a couple sequels, so he already knows where he wants this story to go from here. And since he doesnt' have to work on teh tech too much (and they most likely can't be as groundbreaking as this one was) then more care can be taken on developing story and characters.
