Pearl Jam Tupac Depeche Mode Chaka Can Journey
Were my vote getters, the cars also deserve to be in, but alas you can only vote for 5.
This is of course for the Rock and Roll Hall of fame induction, you didn't think that I was going there did you?
Not really sure why Tupac was even nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame. Out of that group, I'd vote for Depeche Mode.
In reply to Huckleberry:
Which I have no problem with (clearly). Honestly it could be called the modern music hall of fame and as long as it included music by artist and producers who were true to the development of the art and message, I'd be fine with it.
Tupac, Cars, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk...
Not sure about #5. I'm thinking Journey, possibly Chaka Khan.
Looking at groups that were really visionary or influential- that innovated, defined, or revolutionized a style.

Because the "rock and roll" hall of fame is really about American popular music that can draw its roots from blues and jazz. Hip Hop fits in that category. There is a strong history of Hip Hop being influenced by, incorporating, and influencing Rock and Pop.
And it's vote for 5.
Depeche Mode, Cars, Journey, Yes, J. Geils Band because they all tie into my high school years. Others might be more deserving but nostalgia won today.
Pearl Jam, The Cars, Journey, J. Geils Band and Yes if I were voting, but I'm not.
EDIT: I forgot the why part. I think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be about Rock and Roll. A good portion of the list is not rock and roll and therefore I would not vote for them. If they want this to be the American Music Hall of Fame, then they should change the name.
Cthlulu, Giant Meteor, Richard Nixon's head, Deez Nutz, and Total Apathy.
Wait, what? Bands?!? Uh, I'll stick with the same answers, they sound like band names.

I could get behind that ticket.
The local "All kinds of rock - one kind of radio station" morning show were talking about this the other day. Out of 5 people usually in the studio, not one of them knew who the MC5 were. At least one of the guys is a musician, and 2-3 of them are old enough that they should have known.
I kind of cried inside.
And I'm not a huge Kraftwerk fan--not that I don't like them, but I never got into them. But like them or not, they define a genre.
Like others here, I grew up listening to J. Geils. Not sure they made as big an impact as Journey or Yes, though.

I know! I thought the captain was going down in a blaze of glory for a second there.
MC5 absolutely.
Steppenwolf.
Jane's Addiction.
I don't have super strong feelings to fill the other two spots.
Jane's Addiction and Steppenwolf...that takes me back.
I remember watching Steppenwolf at Val-du-Lakes on Johns 55th birthday.
MC5 should have been in from day one; that they aren't proves that being inducted is nothing more than a meaningless honor with no correlation to talent or influence. The Zombies deserve it, as does Steppenwolf, for reshaping the sound of rock in the 60s. Bad Brains, because I'm tired of lesser known quality bands being overlooked in favor of mediocre mainstream crap, and J.Geils, because I liked the band and he's a car guy (saw him running a vintage Alfa at LRP this spring).
I'm really the only one voting for Chic? Without Nile Rodgers most of the popular music of the last 40 years wouldn't exist. I'm voting for Chic, Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode, Journey, and ELO. The majority of the country didn't know who Tupac was until he was shot and they still didn't care. I'm also not sure what Joan Baez would have to do with rock and roll or a hall of fame
