I have dabbled in them but don't know them well.

What are people playing?

What do you look for in a FPS?

Fps, as in first person shooters?

I look for an engaging story. I absolutely abhor games that rely on multiplayer and will absolutely refuse to play with randoms. That being said games I have enjoyed -

Any of the borderlands series (if you're PS5 tiny Tina's wonderlands just hit PS5 gamepass. Worth a go)

Doom eternal.

Robocop

Starfield was decent for one or two runs- don't expect it to be Skyrim. It gets repetitive fast.

There have been others but...I just can't remember right now.

I know you have played the Sniper series.  I think there is a new one of those (5?).

I actually really like the single player part of Battlefield V (WWII based), but it's kind of small (obviously that game is intended for massive online play), so don't pay much for it.  It was a bit similar to Sniper (probably why I liked it).  The one thing that was a bit silly was the wild commonality of guns that were actually extremely rare (don't remember the names, but the German paratrooper assault rifle and the German AK-47 style AR)

Not really a FPS, but Days Gone is rather good (story driven) but has some pretty crazy, shoot a crap load of zombies, mechanics in it.

Hell let loose is great. Even better if you can get 2-5 friends to squad up. WW2 squad based combat with an emphasis on realism and teamwork.

Wolfenstein (RTCW onward) and Doom (any of them) are  great single player.  All the of the Quakes have awesome multiplayer.  I have no issues playing multiplayer with randos in Quake... because there is no voice chat)

With a group of non-randos, I'll play a wide range mutiplayer FPS and enjoy it.  Halo 1.  Left for Dead.

Splitgate (free) is actually an awesome blend of Halo and Portal.

A lot of modern multiplayer shooters are either A) team-deathmatch (laaaaaaame), B) full of F2P bullE36 M3 or C) both    :(

I've replayed return to castle wolfenstein at least every 5 years since I originally played it on a Pentium II. I've never found another game to be as compelling in that genre. (Steel Panthers and StarCraft would be the others with equal longevity)

I just started playing battlebit remastered and Im having trouble getting immersed in it due to the lower poly count graphics. I'm not particularly good at fps games but I do find them fun. I've been playing Chivalry 2 a lot. Every night except for Wednesdays. It's basically an fps if the s=sword or s=shield. I enjoy how close the combat is in there vs shooters, even if I use the longbow and crossbow most of the time.

I like Hell Let Loose as well but Im working on being a good squad mate and haven't played since the latest big patch.

If you guys would like to form a fps night I would do my best to work it into my schedule.

Yes FPS. First person shooters. But really First person combat is a better way to think about it.

I have been playing Squad some. It is fun.  I have dabbled in Arma as well.

I do like the sniper elete series. I played 5 through a bunch of times. It is fun. There are multiple ways you can play through each map that keeps it fresh longer.

I played CoD and Battlefront on Xbox some back in the day... a bit of online, but mostly just single player.   Too much BS online.

Watching this with interest and would be up for it if we ever do a GRM group.  I don't have any FPS on PC at this point, so I'm wide open on that front.

I'm having a tough time figuring out what day of the week this would work for me. It may end up being a deal where I either was a regular that played only until a certain time of night or an occasional player mostly because I get up early 3 days a week to workout. If my schedule stays consistent I might move the workouts to the evening after work and solve that issue. It seemed to me that most of us would have similar issues with time?

Destiny 2 is my preferred FPS. I like the mechanics and strategy of it... and it's a combination of both your weapon builds and your character build and how you get them to work together. COD is okay but it's all about the weapons and communication, player movement and abilities are absolutely minimal. Destiny 2 is like you combine COD with a fighting game and an MMO... character class and abilities combine with weapon builds and armor builds and cosmetics of how you want the character to look (with color shaders and appearance changes available for each piece of armor) and move/perform.

Also there is a vast spread of weapon types - swords, glaives, handguns, shotguns, sniper rifles, machineguns, grenade launchers, bows, pulse rifles, fusion rifles, DEWs, charge-up energy rifles, rocket launchers, etc for just the basic weapons. Then you have the exotic versions of each which do very special things. You also have grenades and special abilities that recharge, along with your armor pieces which can be tuned/tweaked to give different perks to weapons and abilities. Can tune however you want - specialize in speed/agility, or strength/durability, or healing teammates, or max the effectivity of a particular weapon or a certain ability. Don't know of any other game that has the same quality or fluidity of shooting AND moving/fighting mechanics. And it is also a fluid 1st and 3rd person shooter... certain weapons and abilities put you into 3rd person view, along with a few select being both 1st & 3rd (glaives most notably) depending on use mode.

Simple but absolutely fluid mechanics with extremely high customization on how you want to want to play - changing how your character plays is as easy as building armor sets and choosing abilities specifically for how you want to play for different scenarios and save as a loadout. Am not kidding, there is probably at least a billion ways to setup your character... and you can have up to 3 different characters. It's also free and crossplay across platforms - PC, XBox, Playstation.

Is this a thing where we would want a private server? or to team up on a public server? Both? I know options are miles wide for games. Several have been offered up and I know Dean downloaded ARMA 3 the other night, looks fun, 7 bucks. I still don't have it but I'm not opposed to it at all. There's the free games as well, as Vracer111 suggested Destiny 2.

A related thought. Maybe we would need to at least start with a game that can meet everyones PC specs? I don't know what the slowest system is of those who want to play, possibly mine. Ryzen 7 2700x with nvida 2070 super gpu with 32 GB ram on an asrock x470 taichi ultimate motherboard. Or maybe playing something that can cross platforms? It does seem that Arma would meet pretty much any modern pc's ability, maybe less so with newer games.

Your GPU is the most important and what resolution you play at.  Your rig with the 2070 is as good or better than what I am currently using to race Assetto Corsa at 4K

Open arena.  If you cant meet those specs, you likely can't view this website.

I can second Destiny 2. Borderlands is good. I love the Zombie Army series which uses the sniper elite engine and I think the same developers.

So I did a little searching and you can run your own ARMA server.

It is ancient history at this point, but I really enjoyed working my way through BLACK.  It's from before there even was multiplayer online stuff.  It's a good combination of stealth strategy and run-n-gun.  However, it can be a looooong time between save points.  And the last level is really really difficult.

DW and I played Quake I-II-III in single player mode and really liked them.  I also have zero interest in playing with online randos.   Though 20 years ago I did play a lot of multiplayer Q3 with some coworkers at lunch and after hours.

Favorite mode in Destiny 2 is Gambit... where PVP and PVE combine into something interesting:

And even though it's my favorite mode, still have yet to get the Dredgen title though only one thing left to do for completion... have to wipe out an entire enemy team in an invasion. Much prefer playing defense and keeping bank clear along with mote farming for other team mates as PVE is more my forte.
