I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I'd like some thoughts.  I'm looking either at a lower end gaming laptop (AMD Ryzen 5 2500U, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon RX 560X), or an Xbox one.

The main games I'd be looking at are Dirt Rally and the new Microsoft Flight Sim.  The laptop would also allow me to play some older stuff like Richard Burns, and IL2, but if that spec wont allow reasonable play of DR and FS20, then I'm thinking i may be better off with XB1.

Any thoughts from the collective?

A laptop is not really a good choice for gaming unless you really need a laptop.  You can get more bang for your buck with a desktop.

One thing nice about an XBox or PS is you have guaranteed consistent performance.  Far less ideal for something like a flight sim though.

Interesting, I hadn't realised that MS was releasing the new Flight Sim for XBOX as well.

I suspect that neither would allow you to run FS 2020 with all the settings cranked up to the max, so the question is if you would use the laptop for anything else on top of the games/simulators or not?

aircooled makes a good point that laptops in general don't make for that good a gaming experience, although they do come in very handy when you want a mobile gaming experience. If you have the space for a desktop I'd always recommend a desktop over a laptop.

I'm biased but laptop 100%. The Xbox is just not a good system, and little more than a glorified computer with a slower interface.

My friends and I all played games on laptops during college. Nothing wrong with it.

If graphics are priority #1, budget laptop won't cut it. Otherwise I say go for it and enjoy your portable gaming system.

Given the equal prices, I'd buy the Xbox. Any decent gaming laptop that will run anything current is usually about double an Xbox.

Gaming generally likes good graphics cards.  Good graphics cards are very expensive in laptops (very hard to cool also)
