I've been having serious Hypermotard want- but my want involves inappropriate use with lots of gravel and dirt roads, so dropping $6k+ on a nice example doesn't suit me. Please, fellow sprocketeers, keep an eye out on craigslist for one with banged up bodywork for me, so that this can happen:

Not that that doesn't look cool... but without any rear fender to keep the gravel from hitting you in the back of the head - and with that front fender being right on top of the tire it ain't going to work those knobbies in any kind of mud for more than 10sec before locking the front wheel.
Are you sure you don;t just want to go get a real dual sport?
You can put 17s on it too...
I have a real dual sport- bodywork tweaks would be part of the package, the idea would be to use the thing the way most people use their "adventure" bikes but, you know, faster and with more wheelies
Alternatively, I guess I could spend a bunch of money to put 17s on my DRZ, but it'll still be slow. The 434cc big bore woke it up a bit, but it's still not the overpowered lunacy I had in mind.
I've given that problem a lot of thought lately as the 1200 GSA is soooo good on road trips, backroads and as a pack animal but something of a hideous pig in most other circumstances involving dirt. I was heat-stroking out yesterday muscling it over a rock cropping in 90F weather. It's too much work.
A KTM 640 Adv is the sweet spot for me but they are made from unobtainium. As soon as one goes up for sale it;s gone and at top dollar even though it's ratted out and needs everything. The original BMW GS 650 Sertaos look the business too. But... DRZs are cheaper. And plentiful.
In reply to Huckleberry:
I wonder just how terrible and Chinese these are: ebay DRZ supermoto wheels
My drz taught me that a drz would cost too much to make 50+hp. My next motard/ds will be a ktm. It'll probably be an unreliable pos but at least it'll be fast. I want to do a street legal factory sx rep. I love the little details they did on that bike.
There was a Husqvarna SM610 for sale by me for $3000. Open up your search for those. They're a good bang for your buck.
How about a stripped down V-Strom?
Or just put dirt tires on an old, beater 600cc sportbike, like I did...
Honda XR650R with a title and some home machined cast aluminum 17s (the Internet has instructions ). It was good enough to win Baja, a lot, and with tiny amounts of work well make 50 honest hp.

Is this cheap enough as a project?:
