So yesterday I finally cleaned and lubed the chain and retightened it (4100 miles and it was getting a little sloppy).#1, having a stand makes this so friggin easy. Just... why did I wait so long? #2 I cannot get the smell of that nasty, sticky, icky lube off my fingers. All my food has that odor as it gets near my noise.
Ugh.... what brand chain lube do you use? I've got an old can of (I think) Penrite. Stupid sticky, has a blue tint on your fingers. worked well on hte Nighthawk.

I just learned myself so no stones cast from my direction haha. It's one of those things you think you can get away without having, then you buckle in and get one and it makes life so much easier you regret being such a dunce.
I'm using Chain wax applied after a ride while the chain is warm and as it cools gets sucked into the pins and sets up so less fly off.
I use the DuPont Teflon chain wax. Get a Grease Ninja and it will be even easier.

Another vote for maxima chain wax. It was highly recommended in a thread here on the forum.
I use a belt.
I'm a fan of Silkolene. It stays put, goes on clear, doesn't stink and the spray is thin and accurate so it's not all over everything but the chain when I'm done. It also does not fling off much at all if you warm the chain up with a ride, apply and let it cool before you ride again.
My current main mount has a shaft (heh-heh, nohomo) though... which has solved the problem of which chain lube to use and when to tighten it.
On my street bikes, I have always used high quality chains and just cleaned them with WD-40. This is due to my love of white wheels and hate of dirty wheels. But I have never had a bad experience. I have two Ducati's now with their second chains (OEM and replacements) that have 24k mikes on them and the chains show no weirdness and there is plenty of adjustment left. And with the WD40 - the gold chains are clean and shiny and not covered with goop that attracts dirt.

Back in the day before oring chains I would take the chain off every few thousand miles and clean it in the parts washer then throw it in a pot of hot oil for a few hours. Lube a few times inbetween with what ever the mine was using at the time.
Quality modern chains go about 50K if you treat them right. I get the Parts Unlimited private label X ring chains, Rear sprocket every 2 chains, front every 3.
This is my first chain driven bike. I bought a can of Motorex chain lube from the dealer. It's from Switzerland so it has to be good right? Anyway, I clean it with kerosene while warm from a ride and lube it while still warm and let it sit overnight prior to wiping off the excess in the morning. Time will tell if I'm doing it right I guess.
Motul Clean while brushing, Motul lube once clean, and Chain Wax to round out the show. Have yet to have a chain come close to failing.

With the advent of O Ring chains you almost cant do it wrong. I am probably the worst at maintaing a chan and still get 30k out of them. I used to run a scottoiler back in the day but I used to do a lot more miles back then, Chains would go 60k with the automatic oiler but it was a bit messy.
I typically use wd40 only on my WR250R. I live on a dirt road now and find that any type of chain lube or wax attracts too much dirt to stay stuck. When I lived and rode mostly on pavement, I'd use Maxima chain wax.
