So I was muddling around the internet and ran across the Motopeds. I thought they were very cool and make sense. Why would you want, for tight woods riding, something as heavy as a modern day dirt bike? It's half the weight, and if you aren't flying it 600 ft in the air, would be a good choice. I am not a dirt fiend and don't want to put effort into a dirt bike type thing. Then I saw the retro version a client of their's was building.
Now this one looks cool. Like an old board track racer.
Then....
Why not build an old board track racer style moped? I live right near a super bike trail. So I started thinking of ways to do it. I know that I don't want to do it from a motorcycle chassis. I want something fun and light. So after some browsing I can across Derringer Cycles.
They seem stupid expensive so I kept looking and found there are a few out there with similar options. Imperial Cycles also seemed to have what I was looking for. They seem much more GRM and rat rod-ish.
Then I found an Instructable for an electric version. It flys, it looks cool, it is complete within my skills (well with a little welding help, but that is the advantage of working with a NASA certified welder.) It just needs to be dressed up a little.
So, an electric dresser or a gasser revival? What say you GRM?
Whatever does the best wheelies. Given the torque specs on your average wheelchair motor- I say electric.
Those are bicycle wheels and brakes?
Ah, of course they are billed as a performance motorized bicycle
I always though these were called mopeds, and everyone just used moped interchangeably with scooter by mistake. I guess the dirt bike-ish look of the first one makes it a "motoped"? Either that or since moped is used generically for scooter there was a need to differentiate. Sorry, the moped vs scooter thing has always bugged me.
To answer your question obviously electric would be cool, but I think having to pedal it home when the batteries died would suck. The small gas engine would be lighter I'd imagine.
In reply to moparman76_69:
Yeah to me the difference in a scooter and a moped is a scooter is a completely auto (cvt in most cases) pass through footboard chassis motorcycle. A moped is a MOtorized PEDdle bike.
No peddles, no moped. I had a guy at work tell me that the reason most still had peddles when the power went up is they were motorized bicycles and didn't require insurance, license or registration.
slick
If you notice the electric one doesn't have peddles, it is a true electric board track bike.
