Party at the Suddard's! I hear they got some pretty nice E36 M3!

Guys, this is easy. If you're already getting a generator at HF, just pick up a trailer too! Granny gets to stay topside!

Hmmm, time to move to Bonneau.
Have a great trip guys and gals, sounds like a blast.

I still wouldn't use blinkers, they are a sign of weakness. Lane changes are easier when you maintain the element of surprise
My Grandparents were both born about 1 hour north of Traverse City. G-Ma was from Boyne City on the shores of Lake Charlevoix. G-Pa from the town of East Jordan and the Jordan River that flows into Lake Charlevoix. Amazingly beautiful area. If you can, take the pretty drive from TC to Harbor Springs, passing through Charlevoix and Petoskey.
I could give you hundreds of cool places to check out in that area.
Order the Whitefish!
As you know, certain areas have their specialties. When in Annapolis, MD - Crab Cakes; Maine - Lobster, Ensenada, Mexico - Fish Tacos, etc...
When in Northern Michigan, you have to have the Lake Superior Whitefish. The debate could go long and deep of where to have it (and how to have it) but the truth of the matter is that it pretty good anywhere up there. If you choose a restaurant and they do not have Whitefish on the menu in some fashion (baked, fried, broiled, etc.,) leave; you have made a bad choice. Any self respecting restaurant in the entire area will have it. If not, you are in some chain restaurant. Find the door and leave.
Actually, a good test of a restaurant is to ask the hostess, "how do you prepare the whitefish?"
This question assumes they carry it...and they better have a good answer.
Whitefish favorites:
Fancy: Whitecaps in Petoskey, MI
Whitefish Grenoble
Fresh Great Lakes Whitefish sautéed in a lemon caper and
white wine sauce. Served with orange basil scented basmati rice
and seasonal vegetables. $22
Simple but damn good: The Villager Pub in Charlevoix, MI
Whitefish Platter
2 pc - deep fried in a light batter. $11.95. 3pc: $13.95
dinners served with french fries, coleslaw & tartar sauce. substitute baked potato for french fries - $1
I get up that way every couple of years these day. This year, first week of Aug for family reunion.
As a kid, every summer vacation was 2 weeks at Gram and Gramp's.
Supporting my local economy:
One hour from the Michigan/Ohio border (in my home town) is the single amusement park in the world with the greatest amount of roller coasters. If rollercoasters are your thing, then Cedar Point is the place for you.
Sure, you may say, "I've been to an amusement park before." This one is the crown jewel and HQ of Cedar Fair which owns 15 parks.

Alpine amplifier + tablet + cell phones = 35 amp Bosch alternator....does not compute. Danger to manifold!
I know better than to do this type of trip, yet I do it anyway. My family know better than to let me, yet they agree to come. We just love old cars.
Getting to know the guys at Heritage and Silver Start was worth all the trouble. This whole game is as much about the people, than it is the cars.
As for people, a reunion in Detroit is possible, but we are pressed for time. We get in late on the 19th, after a day at Tire Rack and Hoosier and then have meetings with the big three on Thursday and head to Harbor Springs to check out a car collection on Friday morning. Are there any car gatherings near Detroit that Thursday evening the 20th we could meet up at?
And yes, we know Porsche Parade is in Traverse City that week. David will be up there with us.
As for party at my house, not a chance, I have people there 24-7 messing with project cars or staying at the house.
Alex, one of Silver Star's employees, had a fintail like ours. The two cars made a great setting for Tim to shake the shop owner's hand.
We did see some beautiful sights. :)
We're doing a Chicago to Glacier National Park trip last week and this week - 3,500+ miles expected. Lots of awesome family time.
My 22 year old son leaves for grad school on Labor Day - I am driving with him from Chicago to Irvine, CA - 2,200 miles with the Grand Canyon extra stop.
I also drive for work. So I expect a 7,500 mile summer - I just love driving....LOL.

Bah. Only reason I don't make typos is that I'm here in my house and can consult a dictionary.
berkeley typos..just tell Tom to post up more pix.
Glad to hear things are going better today.
Hopefully the gremlins are out of the car for the rest of the trip!
Have Fun

Sounds like a party to me...
Glad to hear the electrical problems are taken care of...
That a great trip. Some niggles but no epic disasters. I'd like to do something similar in my Mercedes but it will have to be shorter since it isn't nearly as well sorted.

Still think it should be the genesis of an Electrical Troubleshooting article...(hopefully I haven't missed a recent article on that very subject!)

I see what you did there . . . "Let there be light"

Well let us konw. I'll still offer my place. HEre's the general area as an idea.
So I just looked under the car... We forgot to reconnect the charging wire to the alternator.
We reconnected it, but it's still not charging. Serves me right for not digging around with my own multimeter yesterday.
So, I dug out the multimeter and went to work. The car doesn't have any drains, and the voltage regulator is working. The car isn't charging at all.
I checked the alternator, and I'm pretty sure at least a few diodes are bad.
So, it's time to change the alternator out with our spare. Unfortunately, we don't have enough tools to do that. I might try just swapping the rear halves (I do have enough tools for that), but that's risky because I have no way to solder anything together if I break a connection.
Stay tuned, I'll make a decision soon.

Put your location out and maybe there's a GRMer nearby?

How far out in the sticks are you? Any Meijer, sorry your still in the South, WallMart or similar should have a socket set and tools.
Re- Detroit get together...
If you all have meetings with the Big 3, what about lunch? Some of us work for them or subsidiearies. Well, unless you are all getting hosted for lunch. Then I would hold out for something nice.
if you are with GM (assuming the Rennisance Center) at 11am, and dressed like you are in Tom's most recent pictures, ask to be taken up to Club Insignia. Great views of Detroit up there.
Still, some can do lunch on the 19th. Easy.
You'll need to log in to post.
