I might be making a trip to Southeast Virginia to pick up some parts. Renting a u-haul cargo trailer and possibly making the trip in a couple weeks.
Anybody needs parts moved South (empty trailer) or some parts North, trailer space permitting.
Just looking to help out and offset a little bit of gas price.
Looks like an adventure is a go! Currently planning on March 14th departure to VA from CT, load up parts and turn around and head back as far I can make it. Stop over in a parking lot or hotel as needed.
I once bought a bus in Minnesota, flew there to pick it up and drove it home with no set plans.
So what did you end up doing with the bus?
I flew in and drove out for 2 rides.
One in NO, the other in OK city. Both fun and uneventful rides home!

Took a couple short trips with it. But then when I let my house go into foreclosure (long story) I lived in it at my parents house a few years.

Well Newtown doesn't seem out of the way. Is there a way to get to you avoiding DC traffic?
In reply to dan0 :
I'm right off i95 about 30 miles south of DC. If you're going straight down 95 to 64 in order to get to SE VA then you'll be passing right by me.
In reply to yupididit :
Well ok, about the place your picking up from. Available around mid day, that Friday 14th?

I can ask! Its a v8 mercedes engine. I really just want the exhaust manifolds but he hasnt shown interest in separating them and the engine is cheap enough to consider taking the whole thing.
Straight down and back. Trailer pickup 20 minutes, 2 gas stops each way, 1 bathroom stop with gas each way, 45 minutes loading parts, and a snack break 10 minutes on the way back at the first gas stop.
One chorizo breakfast wrap with Monster energy, one cinnamon crunch muffin, Mountain Dew AMP Energy, Monster Juice Pacific Punch, and a Lenny and Larry's Protein Cookie.
Still tallying total cost. Tolls were a a lot more than I expected. I need to plan a better way across the Hudson.
I hate tolls. They're still coming up on EZPass. I'm over $200 right now.
Looking at Google Maps with avoid tolls on, would have added 200 miles of driving round trip. But at the 14mpg average I got and $3.75 for premium it would have been about $54 of additional fuel. For zero tolls so total trip would be $150 cheaper.
Last post in here.
U-Haul kinda screwed me. I made the reservation online back in mid February. I wanted to pick up from a hardware store I like using. It was immediately changed to a different location. Still two days. Which was my plan. So I could drive back at whatever pace I chose and unload anytime Saturday.
I got an email Thursday from U-Haul saying reservation updated. I just looked at the email and it still showed the same pickup time and location so I didn't go further. If I had looked it would have showed what I'd find out later.
Picked up the trailer Friday morning. The representative said oh and you're returning it to the hardware store. I didn't know that but said ok, just because I like the place and it's a little bit closer. I only got five hours of sleep the night before so if he said that the return was Saturday morning I missed that. They have you sign the contract on a digital pad before it's printed and I paid my $75. For what I thought was two days at $30 and the safetow insurance and tax.
It wasn't until I was about four hours into the drive I got a call and text confirming the return location and Saturday morning time. Pulled out my contract and sure enough it was on there. Lack of communication on the pickup and the price being what I expected for two days I was in it now.
So I made the long haul as kinda mentioned previously.
8:38am left my town gas station with breakfast
9:09am picked up trailer
two gas stops
6:12-6:50pm load trailer
gas stop and 10 minute snack break, plus one more gas stop
3:50am home
7am unload trailer
8:38am trailer returned
I talked with the guy at the hardware store about the confusion. He recommended calling because I should get my $30 back.
After a little resting, couldn't fall asleep and parts organizing. I called U-Haul. Spoke with a nice representative but she couldn't make a decision on it. Raised to an area manager. She said they have so many business days to respond so I would hear by Wednesday. Preferred contact email. No response.
So around 4pm today tried the live chat. Another nice person. But upon looking into the notes she said the area manager called me informing me the rate was higher because of a one way rental and nothing could be done. I would have to call him. I did and left a message. Plus my preferred contact was email not phone.
Finally got pissy and made a post on instagram tagging U-Haul. Got a reply quickly asking for more details in a message. Sent that along with the timeline. And finally got my $30 refund...
