If it’s the heart that counts, then this Datsun 240Z has a lot of heart to give to the 2023 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports.
Yes, Quentin Yarie’s 1972 Datsun 240Z has all the makings of a terrific track car–MCS coil-overs, full roll cage, TE37 wheels, a selection of sticky tires and more–but it’s what’s under the hood that really makes this Z-car special: A Nissan RB30 inline-six.
For good measure, Quentin feeds the famed Godzilla engine E85 and helps it breath with a BorgWarner EFR turbocharger, resulting in a power output of 700 horsepower and nearly 500 lb.-ft. of torque.
Coming in at 3000 pounds (including driver), the 240Z still retains its stock dash. All the controls–including the lights, wipers and horn–still function as well.
What is the Ultimate Track Car Challenge? It’s our annual no-holds-barred track competition that simply seeks the fastest machines on four wheels. The rules are brief: Car and driver must pass a safety inspection. Period.
