2018 Volkswagen GTI

My “daily driver.” A joyously simple base S model 2018 VW Golf GTI, devoid of as manny gadgets and electronic “nannery” as one can get away with these days. I’ve even resisted the urge (helped, no doubt, by encroaching old age) to modify the thing into uselessness…it rides on original suspension, has stock intake/exhaust tracts, and the same ecm program it left Pueblo with. I have switched to .5” wider Enkei wheels and Michelin Pilot AS tires, but that’s pretty much the short list of things done. Honestly, is 220 hp, 34 mpg, sharp handling, and live-able ride quality in any way inadequate in a FWD hatchback grocery-grabber? Not in the universe I inhabit. This GTI is my third in a list that reaches back to the DOHC MK II model of 1987. Each has had its own personality, charms, and irritation, but all have delivered that wonderful alchemy of speed, agility, and usefulness. Sadly, the GTI is fast becoming irrelevant (and way too expensive) in a world groping towards electric self-driving SUV’s. I’m glad I got mine while they were still around.
