So maybe this track was so old it doesn't really have any relevance, but this still made me a bit sad.
Fredericksburg Speedway, located at the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fairgrounds, was a small short track that operated in the 50's and 60's. Growing up in the 90's and 00's I visited the fairgrounds for several events that were located in the infield of the former track, and the banked oval with its cracked pavement surface always intrigued me. Over the last year or so I've been concocting a few uses for the site, from renting it out for an afternoon photoshoot with some friends, to hosting a rockabilly car show on the site. This past weekend there was an auction going on there and the gates were open so we wandered back to the site of the track. What we found was a completely level site, with the area occupied by the track taken up by fresh, level dirt, with a fence running through the middle of it. I know there's been no racing there for probably close to 50 years, and I'm sure they had a good reason for doing it, but it still made me really sad to see a piece of local motorsports history disappear forever.
I'll let some photos do the talking.
