Better buy your third-gen F body now, once the mullets get wind of this rusted out shells will go for 10K

Holly cow. It does have some good options and is practically new. I know not a lot of Formulas got T-tops, but I thought the non t-top cars got 350's. Some days I really miss my '86 305 t-top car.
That's bogus, the buyer had inside information about the 4 or 5 kilos hidden in the body panels. There is no other logical explanation,
I was there today. Prices seem to be up. Quality of "restored" musclecar era cars seems to be down a bit. There were some cool unusual cars that were well done.
Once again, I ask- Who the heck buys a car and sits it in the garage? Apple stock would have been a much better investment.

I agree - I never saw the excitement of owning a brand new car and not driving it. The first year of a new car is the best thing ever (except for those payments)
It may or my not be worth that much, but I can't quite imagine having $60k and deciding to spend it on that. There are some wonderful beautiful cars that can be bought for $60k, and that ain't one of them.
eBay has Buy Now listed Maserati Gran Turismo coupe's for that same ballpark price with under 40k miles on them. I know, reliability, etc but good lord. There's an extra zero in that Firebird's price.
Our finance guy at work has an 88 mustang gt - coupe, 5spd with under 30k on the clock. I'm thinking he needs to send it to B-J to cash it out.
Every year at auction time these same kinds of posts pop up...it's pretty simple, there were a couple people who wanted that car and they both had money in their pocket. Whether it's actually worth that much or not isn't the point. People have been overpaying for merchandise at auctions since the very first auction was held.
I think that is the car from an old VHS Pontiac trans am/ firebird video I have that was put out by high performance pointiac magazine a long time ago. Jamaica Yellow is a rare color as well.
Honestly an original 1LE of the Pontiac persuasion is very very high on my want list. And if I was there and had the bankroll I wouldn't have stopped bidding until it was mine. It would not be a business or investment decision at all.
Don't get me wrong, the car is exceptional. It's pretty much a time capsule piece, i'd love to have it because i've always wanted an 1LE, but that thing really belongs in a museum. I know it needs to be driven but at this point it's become an "investment". Never thought i'd hear that term being used to describe a 3rd gen Firebird in my lifetime. I just have the sinking feeling that one pristine example of a 3rd gen is going the drive the prices of rattletrap 3rd gens up, which kinda sux for us GRM folk.

It doesn't always come back to an investment decision. Also Apple stock tanked in the 90s and a lot of people dumped it. If we could all see the future we would have bought google etc and got rich.

Thanks for the education. I wasn't aware a high quality washer bottle could add $35K to the price of a car. I'll have to be more careful.
I feel so weird seeing cars that were made when I was in school starting to become collectable. It was always the 60's muscle cars that I saw as put on that pedestal. 92 Firebirds ,even new, it seemed people knew weren't going to be worth 60 grand ever. That's Testarossa money. If I am going to buy something to sit and look at it (which this Firebird will continue sitting) it's going to be exotic, really exotic.
There were several cars there with very few miles on them. A Ford GT and a Gallardo both with less than 1000 and this 76 Chevy 454 pickup who's owner passed away a week after buying it new. Wifey kept it in a heated garage till she passed. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=42&aid=543

This. A car built and sold specifically for SCCA Showroom Stock road racing class. This car may very well be the only one left in this condition. For a GM collector looking for something rare, $60K is pocket change.
Makes you miss the days when the manufacturers offered these semi-secret performance packages where you had to find the right dealer and know the right 'passwords' to order one.

I know what you mean... I was 4 years out of HS when this car was built. I imagine our parents look at the cars from their youth the same way.
Would I pay $60K for this car? Hell no. But I'm not that big of a GM/Pontiac/Firebird fan.
