Luckily the jackholes driving back to Michigan from watching the Mitsubishi thing mid day caught the brunt of both of our despair.
After applying logic to the situation it became apparent that all of the starter issues were likely the same bearing issue that eventually failed and stopped the engine. The hard cranking and weird starting issues, all of that.

Yes judging is difficult, but it provides an interesting look into how to do better for your own builds.
