There was a point where I thought it might be interesting to install a few of these so called air tabs on the rear of the van. I was under the impression that these would help with cross winds while on the highway. The van being light, is hit by some heavy cross winds which makes the van unstable. Often I fear that I'd be pulled over by the police or highway patrol thinking I was driving drunk.

Searching into these air tabs, I found this to be more than I was willing to pay and once mounted on the van, would look down right silly even ugly. mind you I had downloaded a free wishbone design off a creative commons 3d printing site and had the shop print 40 of these things.

With a change of mind, I'm still searching for something that's less likely to draw attention but could still have the benefits of gaining some cross wind deflections. My thought, would a 3 point star pattern, being more flush design offer the same benefits as the wishbone design of the air tabs.

As a last resort and highly unlikely we would do this either.. but I have seen the stick on jet plane type things on some tuner cars.. or maybe those smooth strips with nubs as seen on the roof of some tuner cars..

UPDATE:

I just had a brain storm and sent a few emails to companies I though could handle making something like this.. topic will be updated as soon as we get some sort of reply. Could this be a new wave for the future of race cars by adding my device? we'll see.

The devices are called vortex generators, and they won't / can't do anything to reduce a vehicles movement in crosswinds.

Spoke with an engineer a few days ago ask him to see if he can create something like the air tab. He came up with a design and I submitted it to an unlikely source to see if they can make these things..

Vortex generators are used to clean up airflow on a surface, have a look at how they're used on aircraft.

They might make a difference in fuel economy but I doubt it would be enough to pay you back.

The best help with crosswinds is not driving something shaped like a tool shed. I seriously doubt a cop who is also driving in the same conditions would see a van getting shoved around and assume you're drunk.

My issue is I don;t want these things to stick out like a sore thumb.. more refined and less noticeable but still offer any benefit they claim.

What's wrong with this look?

I think the issue is your stated goal doesn't match what vortex generators are for.
